Sierra nació en Vega Baja, Puerto Rico, y se abrió paso como timbalero en la escena salsera. Su trayectoria incluyó agrupaciones y colaboraciones con algunas de las figuras destacadas del género.

Murió el miércoles 23 de octubre de 2024, según los reportes de Primera Hora y EFE, difundido por SWI swissinfo.ch. EFE le atribuyó 67 años; Primera Hora escribió que falleció días antes de cumplir 68. Sin embargo, Primera Hora también publicó como fecha de nacimiento el 10 de octubre de 1956, que lo sitúa con 68 años al morir. Por esa contradicción, conviene conservar la fecha de fallecimiento y atribuir las edades a cada medio, en vez de presentar una como definitiva.

People en Español informó el 23 de octubre de 2024 que la causa de muerte era desconocida. Ese reporte no confirmó una causa, y no hay aquí una confirmación fiable posterior que permita precisarla.

De Mulenze a La Selecta
Según EFE, Sierra comenzó a ganar reconocimiento con Orquesta Mulenze en la década de 1970 y luego trabajó con Raphy Leavitt & La Selecta. EFE también situó su trabajo con la orquesta de Mario Ortiz entre 1982 y 1984, y mencionó colaboraciones con Cano Estremera y Tony Vega.
Colaboraciones con figuras de la salsa
EFE enumeró entre los artistas con quienes colaboró a Celia Cruz, Cheo Feliciano, Tito Valentín, Gilberto Santa Rosa y Yayo El Indio. Primera Hora también destacó a Santos Colón, Chivirico Dávila y Pellín Rodríguez, entre otros.

Más de 25 años junto a Andy Montañez
Andy Montañez, cantante y director de orquesta, agradeció a Sierra por acompañarlo durante más de 25 años como timbalero de su agrupación. Primera Hora recogió también estas palabras del cantante: “Charlie fue como un hermano menor mío”. El agradecimiento, según el mismo medio, concluyó: “Gracias por acompañarme durante más de 25 años, como timbalero de mi orquesta. Que en paz descanses”.

Sierra formó Orquesta Paso Nivel en 2009 y grabó con ella Ganas de bailar. EFE describió el álbum como una producción de 11 temas. Bobby Cruz también lo recordó tras su muerte: EFE reprodujo su homenaje, “se fue uno de los mejores”.
