Michaela DePrince, bailarina nacida en Sierra Leona que desarrolló una carrera internacional y apareció en el programa estadounidense Dancing With the Stars, murió en Nueva York el 10 de septiembre de 2024. Quién era Michaela DePrince
Nacida Mabinty Bangura en Sierra Leona en 1995, DePrince perdió a sus padres durante la guerra civil y pasó parte de su infancia en un orfanato. Elaine y Charles DePrince la adoptaron en 1999, cuando tenía cuatro años, y se trasladó con ellos a Estados Unidos. En el orfanato sufrió estigmatización relacionada con el vitíligo, una afección que causa pérdida de pigmentación en algunas zonas de la piel.
En Estados Unidos comenzó a estudiar ballet. Su trayectoria, marcada por el paso de la formación a compañías profesionales de distintos países, contribuyó a ampliar la visibilidad de las bailarinas negras en el ballet.
Una carrera internacional en el ballet
DePrince hizo su debut profesional en 2012 en Johannesburgo. Según Dutch National Opera & Ballet, llegó a Europa ese año por invitación de De Dutch Don’t Dance Division y se incorporó a la Junior Company del Dutch National Ballet en agosto de 2013. En 2014 pasó a la compañía principal y más tarde alcanzó el rango de solista.

También bailó con Dance Theatre of Harlem y Boston Ballet. Las fuentes describen de manera distinta el momento de su incorporación a Boston Ballet: Georgia Public Broadcasting informó que se unió en 2021, mientras que el memorial del Dutch National Opera & Ballet señala que dejó Ámsterdam en 2022 para continuar allí su carrera. Por ello, no puede precisarse aquí una única fecha de traslado.
Sus apariciones en cine, televisión y música
DePrince apareció en el documental First Position (2011), que la mostró en una etapa temprana de su carrera. También apareció en el programa estadounidense Dancing With the Stars y en Lemonade, el álbum visual de Beyoncé publicado en 2016. La información disponible confirma una aparición en el programa de televisión, no que fuera concursante habitual.

Su historia también llegó al libro: en 2014 publicó junto con su madre adoptiva el memoir Taking Flight: From War Orphan to Star Ballerina, sobre su vida y su camino hacia el ballet.
Activismo y legado
Además de bailar, DePrince utilizó su visibilidad para apoyar causas humanitarias. Dutch National Opera & Ballet indica que fue embajadora de War Child desde 2016. Su familia destacó su influencia entre jóvenes bailarines negros y su labor de inspiración para quienes querían perseguir una carrera en la danza.

The Washington Post informó que DePrince murió en Nueva York el 10 de septiembre de 2024. En las noticias contemporáneas consultadas, la causa no se había hecho pública; un representante de la familia dijo al periódico que no estaba clara de inmediato.
