The shutdown included MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live in the UK and Ireland—but it did not end MTV altogether. The flagship MTV channel remained on air with a schedule focused more on reality television and pop culture.
Which MTV channels closed, and when?
In the UK and Ireland, the reported closures covered MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live. The channels’ final broadcasts were scheduled for December 31, 2025, with the shutdown taking effect on January 1, 2026, according to Euronews and the Associated Press.
The closures applied to dedicated music-video feeds, not every MTV-branded service. The flagship MTV channel stayed on air, increasingly centered on reality and pop-culture programming, the AP reported.
Which international markets were affected?
Reports named the UK and Ireland, France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Australia and Brazil among the affected markets. The list differs across accounts: Euronews described a staged rollout, while the AP’s later report named the UK, Ireland, France, Poland, Australia and Brazil. These are reported examples, not a definitive record of every territory or TV provider’s channel lineup.

Why did MTV close its music channels?
Paramount was cutting costs
The shutdown came amid Paramount Global’s wider cost-cutting and restructuring, including its merger with Skydance. The AP connected the channel closures to Paramount’s effort to reduce costs across its global media portfolio. Reports citing sources at Paramount described the closure plan, but did not publish a detailed corporate explanation assigning a precise share of the decision to any one factor.
Music viewing had moved online
Streaming and social platforms changed how audiences find and watch music. Services such as YouTube and TikTok offer on-demand selection and opportunities to interact with music and video; a linear channel instead plays a continuous, scheduled sequence. Euronews and Channels Television’s AFP report describe that shift as part of the context for the closures.

Kirsty Fairclough, a professor of screen studies at Manchester Metropolitan University, told AFP that digital streaming platforms such as YouTube and TikTok have “completely refigured how we engage with music and images.” Her comment helps explain the audience shift; it is not a formal statement of Paramount’s reasoning.
How much had music-channel reach changed?
Barb figures reported by Channels Television from AFP put MTV Music’s reach at around 1.3 million UK households in July 2025. For context, the report relayed Barb figures indicating that MTV UK and Ireland’s package of music channels reached more than 10 million homes in 2001.

For viewers who grew up with music television, MTV’s dedicated feeds represented a shared, scheduled way to encounter videos: the channel chose the sequence, and viewers watched what came next. Digital platforms put more control over selection in the viewer’s hands and make music viewing more individualized. Neither model is inherently better, but they serve different habits.

James Hyman, who directed and produced MTV Europe dance-music shows in the 1990s, told AFP: “It was so exciting, because that’s mainly all people had.” His recollection captures how central scheduled music programming once was, even as the channels’ role changed.
For a deeper history of MTV’s early years, Penguin Random House lists I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution by Rob Tannenbaum and Craig Marks. The publisher describes it as a 608-page account of the network’s first decade, when its programming was all videos, all the time.
