Steven Middleton’s documentary, From the Cowboy’s Boot Heel: The Musical Journey of Rob McNurlin, has been selected for the National Educational Telecommunications Association’s “Public Media Making History at 250” collection. The film appears in its “Power of Place” collection, which makes programs about people and places that have shaped the American experience available to PBS member stations for America 250 programming.
What the film follows
Middleton, a Kentucky filmmaker and senior instructor at Morehead State University, produced and directed the documentary. It follows Ashland, Kentucky, native Rob McNurlin through his musical career, his Appalachian roots and his decades-long connection to the Paramount Arts Center. Middleton graduated from Morehead State in 2004 and 2008, according to the university’s October 5, 2026 announcement.
“Documentary filmmaking gives us a way to preserve stories that might otherwise disappear,” Middleton said. “Every place has a story worth telling, and those stories are ultimately found in the people who call that place home.”
What selection for “Power of Place” means
NETA’s “Public Media Making History at 250” collection is intended to support America 250 programming. Its “Power of Place” component makes programs about people and places that have shaped the American experience available to PBS member stations. Selection means the documentary is part of that collection; the announcement does not identify a particular station or broadcast schedule.
