ABC News’s official description presents the series as an examination of two close-knit couples whose public image concealed an affair, betrayal and an alleged plan to kill Mike. That contrast explains the documentary’s title, but a couple’s religious or community identity should not be treated as evidence of criminal conduct. The series combines interviews with Kathy Thomas, relatives and friends, law-enforcement officials, special agents and a former Florida Fish and Wildlife officer involved in the original search.
The two couples at the center of the case
Mike and Denise Williams and Brian and Kathy Winchester were part of the same Tallahassee social circle. Kathy was Brian’s former wife and a close friend of both Mike and Denise. That relationship gives her an unusual position in the documentary: she was not an outside commentator learning about the case years later, but someone who knew the people involved and spent years trying to understand why Mike vanished.

According to the prosecution theory described in the Florida First District Court of Appeal’s 2020 opinion, Denise and Brian began an affair in 1997. Prosecutors argued that the relationship developed into an agreement to kill Mike so the pair could be together and collect the proceeds of his life-insurance policy. The court’s language is important: it distinguishes the state’s trial theory and evidence from facts independently established in every detail. The most legally accurate description is that Brian later confessed and testified that Denise participated in a plan to kill Mike, while Denise’s liability for the actual killing was not sustained on appeal.
Money was part of the prosecution’s explanation. ABC News reported that Mike had purchased a $1.75 million life-insurance policy about six months before he disappeared, and that Brian had sold the policy. That fact became significant once investigators began treating the disappearance as a planned killing rather than an accident.
How Mike Williams disappeared
On December 16, 2000, 31-year-old Mike Williams went duck hunting on Lake Seminole, a large reservoir on the Florida-Georgia border. His boat and truck were found, but Mike was not. Because his body could not be located, investigators initially considered drowning and the possibility of an alligator attack.
For years, the missing-person case remained shaped by that original explanation. There was no body in Lake Seminole to establish what had happened, and the physical evidence available at the time could be read as consistent with a boating accident. Mike’s disappearance therefore became a case in which uncertainty lasted far longer than the initial search.
The documentary uses that period to show how a presumed accident can become difficult to revisit. The later marriage between Denise and Brian drew renewed attention to the relationships surrounding Mike’s disappearance, but suspicion alone did not prove a homicide. The case changed decisively only after new information emerged from Brian Winchester.

Why Kathy Thomas is central to the documentary
The phrase “scorned wife” is an incomplete way to describe Kathy’s role. She was Brian’s former spouse, but the documentary and ABC’s reporting emphasize her persistence, her knowledge of the families and her willingness to pursue information that others had not been able to obtain.
ABC’s programming description says Kathy went undercover in a tense sting operation to secretly record Brian. ABC News separately reported that she helped investigators by recording a crucial conversation with Denise in 2018. Those recordings became an important part of the case’s later development. The series presents Kathy not simply as someone hurt by Brian’s subsequent marriage to Denise, but as a participant in an investigation that helped bring the old disappearance back into focus.
That perspective also gives the series an emotional center. Kathy’s account is about betrayal, but it is also about the practical difficulty of pursuing a case when the missing person’s body has not been found and the original accident theory has hardened over time. The documentary’s strongest question is not merely who betrayed whom; it is how the truth was eventually made testable in court.
Brian Winchester’s confession and the recovery of Mike’s body
In 2016, Brian Winchester was arrested for kidnapping Denise after their marriage deteriorated. ABC News reported that he subsequently reached an agreement with prosecutors that provided immunity related to Mike’s death in exchange for information about the killing.
In 2017, authorities publicly established that Mike had been murdered rather than drowned. Winchester described pushing Mike from the boat and shooting him after Mike reached a stump. He later directed authorities to Mike’s body at Carr Lake, approximately an hour from Lake Seminole.
The body recovery resolved the central physical mystery that had constrained the investigation for more than a decade. It did not, however, result in a conventional murder conviction for Winchester. His cooperation agreement and immunity arrangement are why the case must be described carefully: Brian confessed to killing Mike, but ABC News reported in July 2025 that no one had been convicted of Mike Williams’s murder itself.
What happened in court?
The legal outcome is more complicated than many short descriptions of the case suggest.

Denise Williams
At the trial stage in 2018–2019, Denise Williams was convicted in connection with the case and received a life sentence. Trial reporting described convictions for conspiracy to commit murder and accessory after the fact, as well as principal-to-first-degree-murder liability.
In 2020, the Florida First District Court of Appeal reversed Denise’s conviction as a principal to first-degree murder. The appellate court concluded that the evidence did not establish that she aided or abetted Brian in the actual killing. The court specifically noted that Brian was the only witness who directly connected Denise to the murder itself.
The same court affirmed her conspiracy conviction, finding ample evidence of an agreement and intent to kill Mike. In other words, the appellate ruling did not sustain a murder conviction against Denise, but it did leave the conspiracy conviction intact. ABC News reported in July 2025 that Denise was serving a 30-year sentence for conspiracy.
Rank #4
Brian Winchester
Brian’s confession and account of the killing are central to the documentary, but he was not convicted of Mike’s murder. ABC News reported that he was serving a 20-year sentence for kidnapping Denise, the offense that led to his 2016 arrest and subsequent cooperation with prosecutors.
That produces the legally precise summary: Brian Winchester confessed to killing Mike and testified that Denise participated in a plan to kill him; Denise’s murder conviction was overturned because the appellate court found insufficient evidence that she aided the actual killing; and her conspiracy conviction was affirmed. No person had been convicted of Mike Williams’s homicide itself in the July 2025 reporting.
What the documentary adds beyond the headline
The basic headline is dramatic—a missing husband, a later marriage between his widow and his best friend, and a confession years afterward. But Mr. & Mrs. Murder is also about the limits of early assumptions and the difference between suspicion, testimony and a court’s finding.
Its four episodes place Kathy’s account alongside interviews with people connected to the Williams and Winchester families, investigators and officials involved in the original search. That approach allows the series to revisit the initial drowning theory, the insurance question, the relationships between the couples and the evidence that emerged through the later investigation.
The family impact should not be lost amid the twists. Mike’s relatives, including his daughter, lived with the consequences of his disappearance and the long uncertainty over his fate. The recovered body and later court proceedings brought answers, but not a simple resolution: the person who confessed was not convicted of the homicide, and the surviving conviction against Denise concerns conspiracy rather than the completed killing.

Where to watch Mr. & Mrs. Murder
ABC News reported on July 31, 2025, that all four episodes were streaming on Hulu in the United States. Streaming catalogs, subscription arrangements and regional availability can change, so viewers should check Hulu’s current catalog and their local availability before planning a watch. The series is a documentary, not a scripted remake of the unrelated 2013 Australian crime-comedy television series with a similar title.

Readers who want a longer account can turn to Guilty Creatures by Mikita Brottman. Simon & Schuster identifies the book as a nonfiction account of the Mike and Denise Williams and Brian and Kathy Winchester case. The publisher lists a July 23, 2024 publication date, a 288-page trade paperback edition, ISBN-13 9781668020555 and an unabridged audio edition.
Guilty Creatures is a companion reading choice because it covers the same case, but it should not be described as an official companion to the Hulu documentary. It is best suited to viewers who want a more extended nonfiction treatment after finishing the four-part series.

Mr. & Mrs. Murder turns a 2000 presumed drowning into a story about a concealed relationship, a long-delayed investigation and the legal limits of a witness’s testimony. Brian Winchester confessed and led authorities to Mike’s body, but no one was convicted of Mike’s murder. Denise Williams’s murder conviction was overturned, while her conspiracy conviction survived. Kathy Thomas’s persistence is the documentary’s investigative through line—and the reason the case is more than a sensational story about two marriages.
