Former Mr. Bungle musician Theobald “Theo” Lengyel was arrested in January 2024 after police investigating Alice “Alyx” Kamakaokalani Herrmann’s disappearance identified him as a suspect. The arrest was an allegation, not a verdict: in October 2024, a jury found Lengyel guilty of first-degree murder, and the following month he was sentenced to 25 years to life.
Why was Theo Lengyel arrested?
Capitola police said their investigation into Herrmann’s disappearance led them to identify Lengyel as a suspect. In a statement quoted by the Associated Press on January 4, 2024, police said: “As the investigation progressed, it became clear that foul play was involved, leading to the identification of Theobald Lengyel as a suspect.” The AP’s January 4 report described his arrest in January and said he was held without bail on a first-degree murder count. The Los Angeles Times reported the next day that court records listed first-degree murder, burglary and auto theft charges. Those were charges at the time, not findings of guilt.
What happened to Alice “Alyx” Herrmann?
Herrmann was last seen on December 3, 2023, according to the AP’s initial report. During the search, authorities recovered human remains in Tilden Regional Park in Berkeley. Police said they believed the remains were Herrmann’s, but DNA confirmation was still pending when that January report was published. That was the status reported at the time; the later trial and verdict followed.
What happened at trial?
Trial reporting placed Herrmann’s killing at her Capitola home on December 4, 2023. The AP reported that prosecutors introduced an audio recording recovered from Herrmann’s phone as evidence during the trial; that description is based on the outlet’s reporting of the proceedings.

What was Lengyel’s connection to Mr. Bungle?
Lengyel played saxophone, clarinet and keyboards in Mr. Bungle and left the band in 1996. The AP reported that he appeared on the group’s self-titled 1991 debut and its 1995 album Disco Volante. That musical history explains the band reference in coverage of the case; the criminal proceedings concerned Herrmann’s killing.
