For a movie where a young protagonist actually investigates, start with Enola Holmes for a teenage period adventure, Harriet the Spy for a child’s observant point of view, Nancy Drew for a contemporary teen mystery-comedy, or Young Sherlock Holmes for an adventure built around a youthful version of the famous sleuth. They differ in tone and in how closely they follow a conventional detective story.
Four movies featuring young detectives
These films make a young character’s investigation central, but they are not interchangeable: one is a period adventure, one is a children’s comedy, and others mix mystery with adventure or humor.
| Film | Young investigator | What the mystery involves | Tone and setting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enola Holmes | Enola, age 16 | She searches for her missing mother and becomes involved in the case of a runaway young lord. | Period adventure centered on a teenage girl’s investigation. |
| Harriet the Spy | Harriet, a child observer | Based on the book character Harriet; the film is not necessarily a conventional detective procedural. | Kids & Family comedy. |
| Nancy Drew (2007) | Amateur sleuth Nancy Drew | While traveling with her father, Nancy encounters evidence connected to a long-unsolved movie-star death. | A contemporary-for-its-release teen mystery-comedy. |
| Young Sherlock Holmes | A young Sherlock Holmes | A youthful Holmes adventure with a mystery at its center. | Adventure as well as mystery; Amblin also notes its stained-glass knight as an early fully CGI humanoid figure in a live-action feature. |
Which young-detective movie should you choose?
For a teenage girl solving a case
Enola Holmes is the clearest fit if you want a teenage protagonist whose investigation drives a period adventure. Netflix identifies Enola as sixteen and says the film is based on Nancy Springer’s book series. Netflix’s film page gives the premise.
For a child-centered comedy
Harriet the Spy suits viewers looking for a younger character who observes and investigates rather than a formal detective procedural. Apple TV lists it as Kids & Family and Comedy and describes it as based on the book character. See Apple TV’s listing.

For a youthful take on a famous detective
Young Sherlock Holmes combines a young detective premise with adventure, so it is a good option when mystery need not be the film’s only mode. Amblin’s page highlights the film’s stained-glass knight as an early fully CGI humanoid figure in a live-action feature: Amblin’s film page.
