These three titles offer different ways into stories about caregiver-inflicted illness, but they are a curated starting point rather than a complete filmography.
Which movie or show should you watch first?
| Title | Format and status | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Mommy Dead and Dearest | 2017 documentary about the Blanchard case | Viewers seeking a nonfiction account |
| The Act | Eight-episode scripted limited series (2019), based on real events | Viewers who prefer dramatized storytelling |
| Sharp Objects | Fictional miniseries | Viewers looking for a psychological thriller involving caregiver-inflicted illness |
Documentary: Mommy Dead and Dearest
This 2017 true-crime documentary examines the case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard and her mother, DeeDee Blanchard, including the connection to Munchausen syndrome by proxy. It is the strongest choice here if you want a documentary treatment rather than a scripted interpretation. The New Zealand Classification Office’s content note flags detailed discussion of physical and psychological abuse, an image of stab wounds, sexual material discussed in a police interview, and suicidal thoughts. Consider those warnings before viewing.

Scripted true-crime series: The Act
The Act is an eight-episode dramatization of events involving Gypsy Rose Blanchard and DeeDee Blanchard. Universal Pictures At Home describes the series as based on Michelle Dean’s 2016 article about the case. Because it is scripted, scenes and storytelling are dramatic reconstructions; the series is not a documentary record.
Fictional portrayal: Sharp Objects
Sharp Objects is fiction, not a retelling of the Blanchard case. It can suit viewers interested in a psychological story involving caregiver-inflicted illness, but it should not be treated as evidence about a real case or as a true-crime account.

- In this supernatural thriller, Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon) is a fairly typical working-class guy living in Chicago with his wife Maggie (Kathryn Erbe) and his son Jake (Zachary David Cope). One night at a party, Tom gets into a lively discussion with his sister-in-law, Lisa (Illeana Douglas), who believes in psychic communication and the power of hypnosis. He challenges Lisa to hypnotize him, and she
What “Munchausen by proxy” means—and what it does not
“Munchausen syndrome by proxy” remains a familiar search term, but authorities use different terminology. MedlinePlus describes it as a mental illness and a form of child abuse. The NHS uses “fabricated or induced illness” (FII) and notes that it was formerly known as Munchausen’s syndrome by proxy. American Academy of Pediatrics literature also discusses caregiver-fabricated illness, pediatric condition falsification and medical child abuse; these terms are not used identically by every organization.
These screen stories are representations, not diagnostic tools. A portrayal—or a publicized case—cannot establish a diagnosis for a real person, and not every case of fabricated illness resembles the Blanchard case. MedlinePlus emphasizes the importance of recognizing abuse: “Recognition of Munchausen syndrome by proxy in the child-parent relationship can prevent continued abuse and unnecessary, expensive, and possibly dangerous medical testing.”

How to choose between the three
- For a documentary account: choose Mommy Dead and Dearest, while bearing in mind its specific content warnings.
- For a scripted version of the Blanchard case: choose The Act, remembering that it dramatizes events.
- For fiction: choose Sharp Objects; do not mistake it for a true story about Gypsy Rose Blanchard.
