MoviePass can be worth it if you go often, have participating theaters nearby, and can use your credits for showtimes that would otherwise cost you more than the subscription. It is not a guaranteed number of free movies: monthly fees and credit costs vary by location. Before subscribing, compare your local plan with the ticket prices and showtimes you actually use.
How MoviePass works now
MoviePass is a monthly subscription that gives members credits to use toward movie tickets. Its terms list monthly fees from $10 to $40, but that is a posted range, not a price every customer can get. Plan options and credit amounts depend on location; check the current choices and showtime credit values in the app before joining. Credits are not cash, and they do not guarantee a fixed number of admissions. Unused credits can roll over up to twice the plan’s monthly credit allowance, but expire after two consecutive calendar months. They cannot be redeemed for cash or gift cards. MoviePass also reserves the right to change plan rules and benefits, so review the current terms when you enroll.
Where and how you can use it
MoviePass offers eTicket purchases at designated partner theaters and card purchases at theaters that accept Mastercard. For card purchases, its terms describe reserving a showtime, which releases the required credits for a two-hour window. The company says its network includes more than 4,000 theaters nationwide; that is MoviePass’s own figure, not an independently audited count. Search for your specific theater in the app rather than assuming it participates.

The terms limit members to one regularly scheduled 2D movie ticket per day. MoviePass’s support page on eligible movies says IMAX and 3D purchases are excluded. Theater access and purchase method can differ, so check whether your venue offers eTicketing or requires the card reservation process.
MoviePass provides a virtual card in the app and offers an optional physical branded card for an additional fee. Its signup guidance says eTicket users can start without waiting for the physical card. The physical card is not necessary for every theater or every member.

Cancellation
MoviePass says members can cancel in the app or by contacting support. Its FAQ says an account remains active through the next scheduled billing date, and remaining credits can be used through that date. Confirm the current cancellation steps and credit treatment in the app and terms before relying on a particular date.
How to decide whether MoviePass is worth it
There is no dependable universal break-even point: the subscription fee, credit allowance, and credit cost for a showing vary by location and showtime. Do the comparison using the theater and screenings you are most likely to attend.

- Find your local plan. Note its monthly fee and monthly credit allowance in the app.
- Check likely showtimes. Look up the credit cost for the days, times, and theaters you usually choose.
- Compare the cash ticket price. Check what those same tickets cost if bought directly, including any local discount days you would realistically use.
- Check theater access and convenience. Confirm that your preferred venue appears in the app and whether it supports eTicketing or requires a card reservation.
- Compare local alternatives. If your theater offers its own membership, compare its price, restrictions, and venue coverage using its current terms.
- Account for the limits. Decide whether one 2D ticket per day, expiring credits, and the rollover cap fit your viewing habits.
If you go rarely, usually choose a low-cost theater or discount day, or mainly want premium-format screenings, MoviePass is less likely to suit you. That is a practical inference from the monthly fee, variable credit costs, and 2D limit—not a measured estimate of what subscribers save.

MoviePass’s plans page says members have saved more than $9.8 million at theaters since 2023. That is a company-published aggregate; the page does not explain its calculation method, and it is not an independent estimate of what a typical subscriber saves. The company’s testimonials are selected by MoviePass, so they should not be treated as representative results. No current, independent representative statistic establishes typical savings or reliability across markets.

There is also relevant history, but it should not be confused with evidence about today’s service. In 2021, the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint alleging that the former MoviePass operation misrepresented whether subscribers could see one movie per day or any movie at any theater at any time, failed in numerous instances to clearly disclose material subscription terms and obtain informed consent, and failed to take reasonable measures to secure consumer data. Those were allegations about the former operation, not findings about the relaunched service. The FTC’s 2021 announcement links to the complaint.
