Streaming is adopting some familiar cable-era features, but it has not simply returned to cable. Recent deals combine on-demand apps with linear channels, group subscriptions through larger platforms, and make ad-supported viewing a bigger part of the business. The result is a hybrid market: more bundling, alongside the choice to watch on demand and subscribe to separate services.
Are streaming services going back to cable?
In some ways—but “streaming is back to cable” is too broad. The clearest shift is toward re-bundling: distributors and platforms package services together, while some arrangements put streaming libraries beside traditional scheduled channels. These deals bring back elements of the old pay-TV model without removing streaming’s apps, on-demand viewing, or separately managed subscriptions.
The word “bundle” can describe different arrangements. A TV distributor might include access to an app with a channel package; a platform might group two subscriptions; or a live-TV streaming service might sell a lineup of scheduled channels. Those offers can differ in billing, login, device access, eligibility, and what content is included.
What the new bundles look like
Spectrum and Disney: channels alongside an app
In a June 26, 2025 announcement, Charter said Hulu with ads would be included at no additional charge in all Spectrum TV Select packages, alongside the return of eight Disney-owned linear networks to Spectrum’s channel lineup. Charter said customers could access Hulu through a Xumo Stream Box or any Hulu-supported device. It is a concrete example of a distributor package combining scheduled channels and a streaming library, not evidence that every customer has identical access terms. Charter’s announcement

YouTube and Peacock: two subscriptions, planned for 2027
Axios reported on July 27, 2026, that a multiyear arrangement would bundle ad-supported Peacock Premium with YouTube Premium beginning in 2027. That start date is in the future; the reported bundle is not yet an available offer. The report also said the arrangement extends YouTube TV’s relationship with NBCUniversal for its linear channels. YouTube TV and YouTube Premium are different products: the former is a live-TV channel service, while the latter is a separate subscription. Axios’s report
Why are streaming services bundling together?
Bundling can make services easier to discover or pay for, and gives distributors and streaming companies another way to reach viewers. But a bundle’s convenience is not proof that it costs less. The practical value depends on which services and tiers are included, whether ads remain, what the household already pays for, and whether the offer’s terms fit its viewing habits.

Consumer surveys point to interest in simpler choices, but their findings apply to their defined samples. The Summer 2026 Amazon-Horizon Streaming Landscape Study, as described by Amazon Ads, surveyed 2,449 U.S. adults ages 18–64 who watched at least three hours of streaming weekly and paid for at least one service. In that sample, nearly 30% of new subscriptions were bought through a single bundled provider, and 69% preferred to stay on one service during a viewing occasion. These are study results, not estimates for all viewers. Amazon Ads’ study account
A separate survey conducted by The Harris Poll for Tubi was fielded October 21–November 1, 2024, among 2,502 U.S. adults who streamed video at least one hour per week. Tubi’s March 2025 release reported that 56% carefully monitored streaming services to avoid overspending. Respondents averaged nearly seven streaming services: 3.9 paid and 2.6 free. Those figures describe that survey’s respondents, not a universal count of subscriptions. Tubi’s release of The Stream 2025

Why ads matter to the changing model
Ad-supported viewing helps explain why free services and lower-priced ad tiers are prominent in the market. The available measurements use different definitions, so they should not be treated as interchangeable:
- Free streaming growth: Comscore reported 43% year-over-year growth in total hours watched across major free ad-supported streaming services, comparing U.S. August 2024 with August 2025 in its CTV Intelligence data. Comscore’s October 29, 2025 release
- Netflix ad-tier viewing: In the same release, Comscore said 45% of Netflix U.S. household viewing hours were on its ad-supported tier, up from 34% one year earlier. This is a share of viewing hours, not a share of subscribers.
- TV viewing overall: Nielsen estimated that 72.4% of U.S. TV viewing was on ad-supported platforms in Q1 2025; broadcast and cable together represented 58% of total ad-supported TV. This measures all TV viewing, not streaming alone. Nielsen’s Q1 2025 analysis
Together, the figures show that advertising is significant across free streaming, subscription streaming, broadcast, and cable. They do not establish that viewers are abandoning ad-free plans or moving universally back to pay TV.

How to compare a cable package, live-TV service, and streaming bundle
Do not compare an offer’s headline value with a standard retail price unless the services, tiers, and terms match. Check the actual package before deciding whether it simplifies your viewing or adds something you do not need.
- Content format: Does it include scheduled linear channels, live events, on-demand libraries, or a mix?
- Included services and tiers: Which apps, channels, and subscription tiers are included? Does access require an upgrade?
- Advertising: Is the included tier ad-supported or ad-free? Ads may also vary by content type.
- Billing and access: Is there one bill or more than one? Do you need separate logins? Can you watch through the service’s own app or only through a distributor’s device or app?
- Eligibility and geography: Who qualifies, where is the offer available, and what changes if you cancel or alter the base plan?
- Total recurring cost and flexibility: Compare the current price and renewal or contract terms with the services your household actually uses—not an introductory price against an unrelated retail total.
What the shift means for viewers
Streaming is converging with familiar pay-TV features, especially channel bundles and distributor-led access, while remaining a mix of on-demand apps, live-TV services, and free ad-supported options. A bundle can reduce the number of separate decisions or bills, but it can also tie access to a provider or a base package. Its value is specific to the contents and terms, not to the word “bundle.”
