For a movie night with your son and the rest of the kids, start with their ages and sensitivities—not just a film’s rating. These picks span animation, adventure and music, with different levels of peril, emotional weight and runtime. A story need not focus on a mother and son to make a good shared watch; the aim is to find a film your family can enjoy together.
How to choose a movie for your family
Start with the child, not the rating
Age guidance is a starting point, not a guarantee that a film will suit every child. Think about how your child responds to suspense, frightening images, threats and stories about loss. Common Sense Media’s family-movie guide offers age filters from preschool through teen, while its advice on nonviolent family films notes that children and parents differ in their tolerance for tension and scariness. Read the title-specific notes before deciding.

Use U.S. ratings as advance guidance
The Motion Picture Association (MPA) says its ratings and descriptors give parents concise information to help judge whether a film may suit their children. In the U.S. system, G does not mean a film was made specifically for children: the MPA says, “The G rating is not a ‘certificate of approval,’ nor does it signify a ‘children’s’ motion picture.” A PG rating also is not a child-specific age recommendation. The MPA advises: “A PG-rated motion picture should be investigated by parents before they let their younger children attend.” Look at the descriptors and other detailed content guidance, then decide based on your own child. The MPA reported that 91% of parents surveyed in 2023 found film ratings helpful for making better movie choices; that survey finding does not establish whether a particular movie is right for your household.
Match the mood and the time you have
Decide whether tonight calls for animation, adventure, music or a more heartfelt story. Check the runtime, too: the examples below range from 101 minutes to 174 minutes. If you plan to stream, check the service’s current catalog in your location; a movie recommendation or service guide does not guarantee that a title is available where you live.

Family movies to consider, by age and mood
The age recommendations and content notes below come from the named publishers. They are useful comparison points, not a ranking or a promise that a film will work for every child.
| Film | Age and rating guidance | Story and mood | Content to consider | Runtime |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Finding Nemo | Common Sense Media suggests age 5+; rated G in the U.S. | Animated parent-child adventure; the central relationship is between a father and son. | Common Sense Media flags “very scary moments.” Consider your child’s response to frightening scenes. | 101 minutes |
| Migration | Common Sense Media suggests age 6+. | Animated adventure for a family looking for an energetic journey. | Common Sense Media notes peril and threats. | Not stated in the cited Common Sense Media guide. |
| Onward | Common Sense Media suggests age 7+. | Animated sibling adventure about love and loss; its emotional themes may give families something to discuss. | Consider whether themes of loss feel appropriate for your child. | Not stated in the cited Common Sense Media guide. |
| The Sound of Music | The Movie Moms list suggests age 6+. | A music-led classic for families in the mood for a longer, song-filled story. | Review the film and its content details against your child’s sensitivities. | 174 minutes |
| Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl | Rated PG-13 in the U.S.; Disney describes it as an option for older kids. | Action-adventure. | Disney mentions sword fights, peril, cursed pirates and skeletons. Its guide is promotional, not independent suitability advice. | Not stated in the cited Disney+ guide. |
Picking the right fit for tonight
- For a younger child who enjoys animation: Compare Finding Nemo and Migration by their age guidance and specific warnings. The former has a stated runtime but includes very scary moments; the latter’s notes flag peril and threats.
- For a story with emotional themes: Onward is described as a sibling adventure about love and loss. Consider whether those themes suit the child watching and whether your family wants to talk about them afterward.
- For music and a longer watch: The Sound of Music is the longest option here at 174 minutes, so it may suit a night when your family has time for a full-length musical.
- For older kids asking for adventure: Disney positions Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl for older kids, but its PG-13 rating and listed action, peril and skeletons make a closer content check especially important.
Check where the film is available
Recommendation lists and streaming catalogs answer different questions: a guide can help you choose a film, but it cannot confirm that the title is currently included with a service in your region. Search the service you use shortly before movie night. Availability changes, and the Disney+ family guide is a service’s own selection rather than independent advice about suitability.
