Moonrise is a Netflix science-fiction action anime directed by Masashi Koizuka, who also directed seasons 2 and 3 of Attack on Titan. Its April 10, 2025 premiere has passed; Netflix’s US catalog currently lists 18 episodes. The phrase “Spring 2025’s biggest” is not supported by a verified audience figure or comparative ranking, so it is better understood as headline framing than a confirmed distinction.
What is Moonrise about?
The series imagines a near future in which Sapientia, an international artificial-intelligence network, manages life on Earth. A lunar development program sends criminals and pollutants to the Moon. The arrangement helps preserve Earth’s peace, but leaves lunar communities facing poverty and inequality.

When rebels attack and Jack Shadow loses his family, he joins Earth’s army as a scout. His mission draws him into the Moon’s resistance, where he encounters an unexpected leader. Netflix’s shorter catalog synopsis also presents Jack as an heir caught up in the aftermath of a rebel attack, joining a special military unit to find the true mastermind on the Moon.
The central tension is not simply Earth against the Moon: it is the cost of a stable society when its harms are displaced onto people with less power. Netflix sums up the conflict as a clash between “Earth’s peaceful existence” and “the Moon’s fight for independence.”

Who made the anime?
Netflix credits Masashi Koizuka as director and WIT STUDIO with animation production. Koizuka’s prior directing work on seasons 2 and 3 of Attack on Titan is a notable connection, but a shared director credit does not establish that Moonrise has the same style, scale, or reception.
- Original work: Tou Ubukata
- Original character designs: Hiromu Arakawa
- Character design: Ayumi Yamada
- Director: Masashi Koizuka
- Animation production: WIT STUDIO
- Jack Shadow: Chiaki Kobayashi
- Phil Ashe: Yuto Uemura
- Original theme song, “Daijoubu”: performed by AiNA THE END
Koizuka described the project as WIT Studio’s first space opera and the team’s first original work produced with Netflix, saying there was “a real sense of excitement and a sort of madness” during production. Netflix’s announcement attributes that comment to the director.
When did Moonrise premiere, and how many episodes are listed?
Netflix announced the premiere for April 10, 2025, at 7:00 AM GMT. That date is now in the past. Netflix’s US title page lists 18 episodes; episode counts, audio, subtitles, and availability are catalog details that can differ by territory or change over time.

Is it really Spring 2025’s “biggest” Netflix action anime?
That claim cannot be verified from the available official information. Netflix identifies the series as action and science fiction, and confirms its release date, credits, and US episode listing, but those facts do not show that it was the season’s biggest anime by viewership, popularity, budget, or any other defined measure. The director’s Attack on Titan credit is useful context—not a ranking or guarantee of quality.
