Spoilers for the Attack on Titan manga, including chapter 138. Eren’s story with Mikasa contains strong signs of care and attachment, but the evidence does not support a simple claim that he consistently acted as her loving romantic partner. The scarf scene is an early emotional turning point; chapter 138 offers a late, more direct expression of concern for her future. Between them, the story—and creator commentary reported by ComicBook.com—leaves room for a more complicated reading.
Does Eren love Mikasa?
A persuasive reading is that Eren loves Mikasa in the sense of deep attachment and care, especially by the story’s end. That does not mean every protective act proves romance, or that their relationship is consistently healthy. It helps to separate what the story shows from what a reader infers: the scarf scene carries emotional weight, while Eren’s later words can be read as wanting Mikasa to live beyond him.
There is also an important complication. In 2018, ComicBook.com reported Isayama describing Mikasa’s presence to Eren as “more like a mother” than a lover, and relayed a remark about Eren needing independence from her. The quotation is secondary reporting, not a verified transcript of the original Japanese interview; it nevertheless cautions against treating a romantic interpretation as settled from the outset. Why the scarf scene matters
Chapter 50: an emotional turning point, not a kiss
The scarf is one of the clearest recurring symbols associated with Eren and Mikasa. ComicBook.com reported that the editors expected the scene to lead to a kiss, and attributed to Isayama embarrassment about drawing one and regret about not confronting the emotions in that moment. The kiss did not happen in chapter 50; the significance lies in the emotional expectation around the scene and in the scarf’s continuing place in their relationship. What chapter 138 adds to the reading
An imagined life together—and a request to move on
A March 2021 ComicBook.com report describes Mikasa experiencing an alternate future in which she and Eren ran away together. In that sequence, this version of Eren asks her to discard the scarf after his death, forget him, and live freely. Read as an expression of care, the request suggests that he wants her future to be her own rather than organized around grief for him. But the report notes uncertainty about whether the exchange is shared between them or is Mikasa’s experience, so it should not be treated as unambiguous proof of authorial intent. ComicBook.com’s report on chapter 138.
How to read the evidence without overstating it
- Care and attachment: The scarf scene and chapter 138 exchange support a reading of profound emotional attachment.
- Romance: The chapter 50 moment carries romantic expectation, but no kiss occurs there; reported early creator commentary also complicates the claim that Eren always saw Mikasa as a romantic partner.
- Healthy partnership: Love as an interpretation does not establish that Eren behaved as a consistently loving or healthy partner. His feelings and the effect of his actions are separate questions.
Those distinctions are more useful than treating every protective act as a separate proof. The strongest case rests on a small number of emotionally charged moments and on how they change meaning across the story, not on a verified list of ten independent scenes.
