Moon Unit Zappa says the message her father, Frank Zappa, left for her during his final illness was written in a letter: “I love you, Moon.” In an excerpt from her 2024 memoir shared with Yahoo Entertainment and PEOPLE, she recalls that her mother asked Frank to write a letter for each child when he became bedridden. The letter is distinct from a separate memory Moon describes of her father saying “Wow.”
What was Frank Zappa’s message to Moon?
In the excerpt published with Yahoo Entertainment and PEOPLE’s August 17, 2024 exclusive, Moon recalls reading a handwritten letter from her father. She describes the ink as shaky and reproduces its message as “I love you, Moon.” This is Moon’s recollection as presented in the memoir excerpt, not a separately authenticated copy of the letter.
Moon says her mother had Frank write a letter for each of the children as he became bedridden. Her account establishes a message written during his serious illness; it does not say that he wrote it at the precise moment of his death or that this was the only thing he said to Moon near the end of his life.
How the letter differs from the “Wow” memory
The same interview recounts another moment from Frank’s illness: Moon says he looked at something she could not see and “just said, ‘Wow.’” She adds, “I don’t know what he saw on the other side.” That is a separate spoken recollection, not the text of the letter. Her uncertainty is part of the account; she does not claim to know what he saw.

Where Moon shared the story
The letter appears in the Yahoo Entertainment/PEOPLE exclusive, published alongside Moon’s memoir, Earth to Moon: A Memoir. The Los Angeles Times identifies the 2024 book as published by Dey Street Books and describes Moon’s earlier musical contribution: as a teenager, she recorded “Valley Girl” with her father.
Moon has spoken about the memoir’s broader purpose as well. In an August 15, 2024 Washington Post Live discussion, she said she wanted “to show the human side of my father, the dark side of genius, and the cost of fame.” That context helps explain why the letter is presented as a personal family memory rather than as a complete account of their relationship.

What is independently established about Frank Zappa’s death?
Frank Zappa died of cancer in 1993 at age 52, according to the Los Angeles Times. Moon also confirms the year and age in her Washington Post Live interview. Those biographical details are distinct from the private circumstances of the letter, which are known here through Moon’s account.
