Why were there two drum kits?
In a 2017 interview published by the Moody Blues’ official site, founding drummer Graeme Edge explained that he was still able to play but had another drummer onstage and took rests: “I can still do it. But I do have a young man up there with me. There are two drummers and I do take some rests.” The interview was published June 6, 2017.
That first-person account supports the straightforward explanation: the band shared live drumming duties. It does not establish a precise split between the players or show that Edge stopped playing altogether.
Who was the other drummer?
Contemporary reports of separate Moody Blues concerts identify Gordon Marshall as the second drummer in the touring lineup. A 2011 concert report names Marshall, while a 2009 review of a Santa Barbara concert reports two drummers and says both kits were used during “Isn’t Life Strange?” A 2014 review also describes Edge alongside a second drummer on the band’s touring lineup.

These accounts establish that a two-drummer arrangement appeared in the band’s live shows across multiple years. They do not identify every musician in the HDNET footage itself.
Was Graeme Edge replaced?
The available evidence points to sharing the stage, not replacing Edge. He described himself as still playing and taking rests, and contemporary concert reporting continued to list him in the touring lineup. There is no support in these sources for a hidden replacement, miming, or a secret production explanation.

What can—and can’t—be concluded about the HDNET footage?
The exact HDNET program or concert represented by the title is not identified in the available sources. They therefore do not show which songs featured one drummer or both, whether the players duplicated parts, or how much of the performance each handled. Edge’s explanation and reports from other concerts make shared live duties the best-supported answer, but not a song-by-song account of that particular broadcast.
