Charlie Hunnam lost weight while filming his portrayal of Ed Gein, according to director and co-showrunner Max Winkler. Winkler said the change became especially striking when he saw Hunnam after production, with his hair, beard and muscles back. The interview does not give an amount of weight lost or describe a specific diet or training plan.
What did Charlie Hunnam do for the Ed Gein role?
In an interview published by AOL on October 2, 2025, Max Winkler said Hunnam was “not eating” during filming and kept losing weight as production went on. Winkler recalled seeing the actor after filming, when Hunnam had his hair, beard and muscles back, and thinking: “I cannot believe that you put yourself through that.”
That is Winkler’s account of what he observed; the interview does not report an independently measured change. It gives no precise weight-loss figure, detailed eating routine, exercise regimen or medical effects, so those details cannot be established from the interview.
How long did filming last?
Winkler said filming took five or six months. He described Hunnam’s weight loss as continuing during that stretch, but did not identify when it began or quantify the change. The duration is his approximate account, not a precise production schedule.

How Winkler described the season
Winkler said the season was intended as a character study, drawing on research to explore mental illness, isolation and the circumstances of a man in mid-century Wisconsin. That describes the director’s aims and framing; it is not, by itself, an independent assessment of the series’ historical accuracy.
He also connected Gein’s cultural influence with Psycho, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre and The Silence of the Lambs. Winkler described the season as “a really, really interesting character study” of someone “so uniquely influential in American pop culture.”

How Hunnam came to the role
Winkler said he thought of Hunnam for the part after having dinner with the actor, then messaged Ryan Murphy with the suggestion. He recounted that the group discussed the project shortly afterward.
