Architect Michael Benson, musician and venue manager Tony Papa-Adams, and DJ Paul Malone bought Mojo’s Bar in 2024 with a plan to preserve its live-music identity while making the North Fremantle venue work as a bar on non-gig nights. Their proposals included a roofed beer garden, a hi-fi and vinyl concept, a reopened kitchen and acoustic improvements. Some plans were delayed by a 2025 funding shortfall; later reporting describes a broader neighbourhood bar with food and live music, while accessibility renovations remain planned rather than complete.
Who bought Mojo’s Bar?
Benson, Papa-Adams and Malone acquired Mojo’s in 2024 from Triple-1-Three, which had taken over the venue in 2021. The new owners’ challenge was to maintain a long-running live-music venue while expanding what it offered outside performance nights. PerthNow’s 2024 report covered the sale and the initial plans.
What did the owners propose in 2024?
A bar beyond gig nights
Benson argued that a small venue could not depend solely on live shows. “For small music venues to survive we have to change the business model,” he told PerthNow. He also warned, “If we don’t make that change, it’s just not going to survive,” framing the project as the owners’ rationale rather than a guarantee of financial viability.
A refreshed beer garden, vinyl and kitchen
The proposed work included a roof and bar for the beer garden, a sound system there, and acoustic improvements. The owners also wanted to reopen the kitchen and use the green room for a vinyl shop when performers were not using it. These were proposals announced in 2024, not all confirmed completed work. PerthNow reported Mojo’s capacity as 190 people and a $60,000 federal Revive Live grant for acoustic upgrades; those figures relate specifically to the venue and that report.

Why were the renovations delayed?
In June 2025, PerthNow reported that extensive renovations had been put on hold amid financial difficulties. The owners were fundraising for work and equipment, with a stated target of $16,000 for items including furniture, taps, sound and lighting equipment, and kitchen work. That was a target reported at the time, not evidence that the amount was raised or a description of the venue’s current finances. The June 2025 report describes that setback.
What has changed since the original announcement?
A 2025 City of Fremantle feature described Mojo’s operating as an everyday bar and vinyl record store, with a hi-fi listening bar and redesigned beer garden. Papa-Adams explained the broader approach: “We realised that, for live music at Mojos to survive long term, we need to offer our community more than just shows a couple nights a week.”

Mojo’s own About page and a September 2026 PerthNow report present the venue as a seven-day neighbourhood bar with food and live music. Taken together, these later accounts show the business expanding beyond gig nights, but they do not establish that every element proposed in 2024 was completed exactly as first described.
