Mojo Nixon—the stage name of singer-songwriter Neill Kirby McMillan Jr.—died on February 7, 2024, at age 66, after a reported cardiac event aboard the Outlaw Country Cruise. He was best known for “Elvis Is Everywhere,” the gleefully absurd 1987 song he recorded with multi-instrumentalist Skid Roper, but his career also spanned punk-rooted roots music, acting and radio.
Who was Mojo Nixon?
Born Neill Kirby McMillan Jr. in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on August 2, 1957, Nixon grew up in Danville, Virginia. He attended Miami University in Ohio, studying political science and history, lived in London, and moved to Denver in 1980 to work for VISTA, the federal volunteer program. He formed the punk band Zebra 123 in Denver before moving to San Diego and starting a musical partnership with Skid Roper. The Washington Post’s February 8, 2024 obituary traces that path from his early life to the irreverent performer who became a cult figure.
How “Elvis Is Everywhere” became his signature song
Nixon and Roper released their self-titled debut in 1985 on Enigma Records. Their rude, comic “Stuffin’ Martha’s Muffin,” aimed at MTV VJ Martha Quinn, drew the network’s attention. The partnership’s best-known release followed in 1987: Bo-Day-Shus!!!, which included “Elvis Is Everywhere.”
The song turns its central joke into an exuberant premise: Elvis Presley can be found in virtually anything. Its refrain declares, “Elvis is everywhere/ Elvis is everything/ Elvis is everybody/ Elvis is still the King,” while its references range from jeans and cheeseburgers to Joan Rivers and the Bermuda Triangle. The song even invents an “evil opposite of Elvis, the anti-Elvis,” and names actor Michael J. Fox. The Washington Post describes the song’s comic logic and details in its obituary.

Heavy MTV rotation for the video took Nixon beyond the underground audience he had developed with Roper, and he later performed the song on The Arsenio Hall Show. It spread by word of mouth, though it did not appear in the Billboard charts, according to the Los Angeles Times obituary published February 8, 2024.
What else was Mojo Nixon known for?
“Elvis Is Everywhere” was the breakthrough, not the whole story. Nixon’s songs mixed rockabilly, blues and roots music with punk energy, novelty songwriting and deliberate provocation. He took comic aim at celebrities, sex, alcohol, politics and cultural pieties in songs including “Debbie Gibson Is Pregnant With My Two-Headed Love Child” and “Don Henley Must Die.”

He continued recording outside the Nixon–Roper partnership, performed with the Toadliquors, and collaborated with former Dead Kennedys singer Jello Biafra on Prairie Home Invasion (1994). His acting credits included Great Balls of Fire! (1989) and Super Mario Bros. (1993). Around 2005, according to the Washington Post, he joined SiriusXM, where he hosted Loon in the Afternoon on Outlaw Country.
Nixon’s persona was as central as his songs: loud, funny and proudly outside the mainstream. The Washington Post reported that he described himself as the voice of “the doomed, the damned, the weird.” In a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, quoted by the Post, he put the point plainly: “I don’t want to be taken seriously. I’m a cult artist.” Recalling his approach in a 1990 New York Times interview, he said: “I decided I should do what I do best, which is to make front-porch boogie-woogie saying things that will hopefully make grandma blush in two or three different ways.”

How did Mojo Nixon die?
Nixon died after performing on the Outlaw Country Cruise, which was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico, the Washington Post reported. His former bassist and documentary director Matt Eskey said Nixon was asleep when he had “a cardiac event,” believed to be a heart attack or stroke. The reports do not establish a confirmed specific medical diagnosis, so the cause is best described as a reported cardiac event.
Nixon’s family announced his death in a statement reproduced by the Los Angeles Times: “How you live is how you should die. Mojo Nixon was full-tilt, wide-open rock hard, root hog, corner on two wheels + on fire.” The family also described his final show and the cardiac event.
