Spoilers for the full ending and post-credit scene. Moana reaches Motufetū and breaks Nalo’s curse, but his lightning kills her. Maui and the ancestors bring her back as a demigod. Once Maui raises the island, ocean routes reconnect and Moana returns to Motunui with people from other communities. The post-credit scene shows Nalo still active alongside Matangi and Tamatoa: a possible opening for another story, not confirmation of Moana 3.
Why Moana sets out for Motufetū
Set three years after the first film, Moana 2 finds Moana an experienced wayfinder and leader. She wants to understand why her people have not encountered other communities as they explore the ocean. Her ancestor Tautai Vasa reveals the lost island Motufetū, which Nalo, the god of storms, sank and cursed to keep people from connecting.

Moana’s goal is therefore not to claim new territory. Reaching Motufetū and breaking its curse can restore the routes between communities. Screenwriter and executive producer Jared Bush described the shift this way: “If the first film is about reconnecting with your past, this film is about Moana and her people’s future.”
What happens to Moana at the climax?
She reaches the island, but Nalo strikes back
Maui tries to raise Motufetū while Moana dives to touch it and break the curse. Nalo’s lightning strips Maui of his demigod power and kills Moana. Her death is not permanent: Maui’s grief calls the ancestors to intervene, and they restore her as a demigod. She returns with a wayfinder tattoo, marking a new connection to the gods and ancestors as well as her continuing role as a leader.

Maui raises Motufetū and the routes reopen
With the curse broken, Maui regains his power and lifts Motufetū. The island’s restoration reconnects ocean routes that Nalo tried to sever, making it possible for scattered peoples to find one another again. Moana returns to Motunui with a fleet from the newly connected communities.
The transformation is both personal and communal: Moana survives with a changed status, while her mission makes reconnection possible for her people. The filmmakers have described the sequel’s focus as the people’s future; reading Moana’s new demigod status as a bridge between human leadership and the divine is an interpretation of the ending.

What Matangi’s role means
Matangi initially appears to be working for Nalo, who has stationed her to keep travelers away from Motufetū. But she is not simply loyal to him: director David G. Derrick Jr. says she wants freedom from being stuck in that role. That helps explain why she assists Moana’s escape. Her later appearance with Nalo leaves their relationship unresolved rather than proving that her loyalties are settled.
What the post-credit scene reveals
After Moana’s celebratory return, the post-credit scene cuts to Nalo and Matangi. Tamatoa appears and aligns himself with Nalo. The scene establishes that Nalo remains active and now has Tamatoa alongside him, leaving room for a future conflict. It does not announce another film.
Does the ending confirm Moana 3?
No. In a March 22, 2025 interview, director Jason Hand said the idea of Nalo remaining a threat would be useful “if we choose to go into 3.” That is a conditional comment, not a confirmation. As of October 8, 2026, Disney’s film listing surfaced the live-action Moana project but no animated Moana 3 listing. The careful conclusion is that no public confirmation was located in the sources checked; that does not establish whether private development exists.
