Moana 2 did not open to $300 million. Its opening estimates were about $386 million to $389 million worldwide, reported by Disney in late November and early December 2024. The $300 million figure is a later domestic cumulative milestone, reached after the film’s second weekend and reported by the Associated Press on December 8, 2024. The two numbers measure different things, so the headline mixes them up.
Where the $300 million figure comes from
The Associated Press reported on December 8, 2024 that Moana 2 had reached $300 million in domestic (U.S. and Canada) cumulative box office and $600 million worldwide. That is a running total through the second weekend, not an opening. AP’s second-weekend numbers were not adjusted for inflation, so they are nominal figures.
Opening estimates by source and date
Three sources give the opening numbers. Each one has a different date, measurement window, and territory, so each must be cited with those details attached.

Why the domestic numbers do not match
The five-day holiday estimate
Disney’s $225 million domestic figure covers the full five days from the Wednesday opening through Sunday, December 1, 2024, including the Thanksgiving holiday. It is a studio estimate published on December 1, 2024.

The three-day opening frame

Why the worldwide totals differ slightly
Disney’s $389 million (December 1) and Disney UK’s $386.3 million (December 2) come from two releases a day apart. They are close but not identical. Cite whichever figure matches the report you are quoting, and include its date.

The film and the people behind it
Walt Disney Animation Studios made Moana 2 as an animated musical adventure. Moana answers a call from her wayfinding ancestors and sails to the far seas of Oceania with Maui and a crew. Disney UK lists Auli‘i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson in the voice cast, and David Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller as directors.
Alan Bergman, co-chairman of Disney Entertainment, said in the December 1, 2024 report: “Moana 2 has far surpassed our high expectations this weekend and is a testament to the phenomenon that Moana has become.” That is a studio executive’s reaction, not independent box-office analysis.
