MKV vs MP4 for YouTube Uploads: Which Format Should You Use?

YouTube recommends MP4 for ordinary uploads, but MKV is tested for HDR. Here are the settings to use—and why live streaming is a separate workflow.

For a regular YouTube video upload, choose MP4. YouTube explicitly lists MP4 as a supported format and recommends an MP4 container with H.264 video for uploads. MKV is not listed in YouTube’s general supported-format list, although YouTube says MKV has been tested for HDR uploads. If by “streaming” you mean broadcasting live, neither file container is the relevant choice: YouTube Live uses an encoder and an ingest protocol.

MKV and MP4 are containers, not video-quality settings

A container packages video, audio, and related information into a file. MKV and MP4 are containers; H.264, HEVC, and AV1 are examples of video codecs. The file extension alone does not tell you the full encoding or determine how good the picture looks.

YouTube processes uploaded videos for playback, converting them to the highest resolution available. Its guidance says processing time varies with factors including quality, duration, format, and traffic. You therefore should not expect an MP4 container by itself to improve picture quality or guarantee faster processing.

What YouTube says about MP4 and MKV

Use case MP4 MKV
Ordinary video upload Listed as a supported format and specified in YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings. Not listed in YouTube’s general supported-format list.
HDR upload Named among containers tested to work for HDR. Also named among containers tested to work for HDR; correct HDR metadata and codec settings still matter.

Sources: YouTube’s supported file formats and HDR upload guidance. These are distinct recommendations: MKV’s appearance in the HDR guidance is a specific exception, not a general recommendation to export ordinary uploads as MKV.

Recommended settings for a dependable MP4 upload

YouTube’s recommended upload settings specify the following. Match the frame rate to the original recording rather than changing it without a reason.

  • Container: MP4.
  • Video: H.264, with progressive scan.
  • Frame rate: the same frame rate as the recording.
  • Audio: AAC-LC, Opus, or Eclipsa Audio, at a 48 kHz sample rate.
  • MP4 layout: place the moov atom at the beginning of the file (“Fast Start”) and avoid edit lists, which YouTube notes might prevent correct processing.

YouTube’s settings also include bitrate recommendations by resolution and frame rate. Choose a suitable value for your export rather than treating a bitrate or container as a guarantee of quality; the required bitrate depends on the video settings. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the full current guidance.

If your video is already an MKV

Do not rename an .mkv file to .mp4 and assume it has been converted. Changing the extension does not change the container, codecs, or metadata. If YouTube will not accept or correctly process the file, use video-editing or conversion software to export a new file with compatible settings, then upload that export. YouTube recommends checking or changing the file’s settings with editing software and re-uploading; it does not require paid software. Its upload troubleshooting guidance covers audio and video issues.

  1. Open the original in a video editor or converter that can read the file.
  2. Export a new video using MP4, H.264 video, progressive scan, and audio settings compatible with YouTube’s recommendations.
  3. Keep the original frame rate where possible, and check that the exported file plays correctly before uploading it.
  4. Upload the newly exported file and allow YouTube to finish processing before judging which playback resolutions are available.

If you mean YouTube Live, the file format is a different question

A prerecorded MKV or MP4 is an upload file. A live broadcast is sent from an encoder to YouTube using live encoder settings and an ingest protocol such as RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube then transcodes the stream for viewers. Choosing an MP4 export does not configure a live broadcast. For encoder setup, use YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
