In an April 19 report, The Associated Press attributed to Springfield police the description of a “possible accidental and self-inflicted gunshot wound.” The AP reported that officers found McGee during a Friday morning wellness check and took him to a hospital with serious injuries. Police spokesperson Cris Swaters told the AP: “He was transported to the hospital with serious injuries where he later died. This is an active investigation.”
The wording “possible” matters: it describes an initial account, not a definitive determination of how or why the injury occurred. The sources cited here do not establish whether authorities later issued a final finding. No motive has been established in these reports.
