With her detective business thriving and a new relationship with Inspector Alexander Blake taking shape, the season keeps its heroine’s work at the center while allowing her personal life to change. The official setup promises that balance; the season’s success rests on whether Eliza still drives both sides of the story.
Does Eliza need the Duke in season 6?
No—not for the series to have a compelling detective at its center. PBS now calls the drama Miss Scarlet, after previously billing it as Miss Scarlet and The Duke. Eliza, played by Kate Phillips, remains a Victorian London investigator who built her work from her late father’s business. The title change reflects a shift in emphasis, but the more meaningful test is narrative: does Eliza retain agency when the relationship around her changes?
Season 6 gives her room to do so. PBS describes her business as thriving and says she is trying to follow her heart by developing a relationship with Inspector Alexander Blake, played by Tom Durant-Pritchard. That premise could make romance a distraction from the investigations, or it could put two capable characters in a story where neither exists merely to complete the other. The season is most convincing when Eliza’s professional choices remain consequential and Blake’s presence does not displace her as the engine of the case.
The distinction matters because a new romantic lead is not automatically a substitute for the Duke. The question is whether the show preserves the qualities that made Eliza’s detective work interesting: her initiative, her willingness to operate in a world that restricts women, and her ability to make a case move on her own terms. Season 6 has a clear opportunity to prove that those qualities belong to Eliza, not to the partnership she happens to be in.

How season 6 balances cases and character change
The season’s mysteries continue to give Eliza different institutions and problems to navigate. Its opening case enters the fledgling field of psychiatry, with a violent patient at large, a murder, and an unidentified body. The episode’s official transcript also gives Blake a telling line: “Eliza, you are an excellent detective, and I need your help.” It is a direct acknowledgment of her expertise; whether the episode fully gives her the investigative control implied by the line is part of the season’s larger test.
Episode 4 broadens the procedural setting by involving both the City of London Police and Scotland Yard in a case concerning Dylan Cooper, whose crimes cross both jurisdictions. The finale, according to the PBS-affiliated KPBS guide, centers on the mysterious death of a foreign ambassador, with the Governess asking Eliza to investigate. Those cases offer a range of settings and stakes rather than a single mystery stretched across the season.

That episodic structure can work in the show’s favor: the investigations keep Eliza’s vocation visible while her relationship and the supporting characters evolve. The challenge is keeping the two tracks in conversation. Romance should affect the choices Eliza makes, not simply pause the detective story; and procedural momentum should not flatten her private life into a subplot that matters only when it affects a case.
What changes for Blake and Ivy
Blake is not presented as a finished version of the Duke dynamic. PBS’s season preview describes him as more confident and points to the developing relationship with Eliza. That makes his role potentially more interesting than simply stepping into an old romantic slot: a relationship between two people with professional identities needs negotiation, not just attraction. The useful measure is whether Blake’s confidence creates room for a genuine partnership or makes Eliza’s story smaller.

Ivy’s arc also adds a second view of change. The preview points to her progress at the police station and her married life, giving the season a supporting character whose work and personal circumstances are both moving forward. Cathy Belton and Ansu Kabia are among the returning cast named in PBS’s season announcement. The official material establishes these threads, though it does not settle how much screen time or resolution each receives.
