Maria Friedman’s 2023 Broadway revival gives Merrily We Roll Along a persuasive answer to the question at the heart of its story: how did three close friends end up so far apart? By beginning near the end of their relationship and moving backward, the production lets viewers watch disappointment give way to the idealism and possibility that once bound Franklin Shepard, Mary Flynn and Charley Kringas together.
What is Merrily We Roll Along about?
Stephen Sondheim wrote the music and lyrics, with a book by George Furth. The musical follows composer Franklin Shepard, writer Mary Flynn and lyricist-playwright Charley Kringas across nearly two decades of friendship and change. Franklin’s pursuit of success alters the balance among them, and the story unfolds in reverse: it starts with the consequences and gradually reveals the choices and hopes that came before. The production’s official framing asks, “How did you get to be here?” The Broadway production site describes the story and its backward movement.
That structure is the show’s central dramatic gamble. Instead of building toward a conventional resolution, it asks the audience to revise its understanding of each character as earlier moments come into view. A strained exchange can become newly painful when the scene that follows in story time reveals how much affection preceded it.
Does the revival make the reverse chronology work?
Yes: the backward structure gives this production its emotional engine rather than making it a puzzle to solve. The shifting time frame changes the meaning of what the trio says and withholds. Watching the friends become younger does not erase what they have done; it exposes the hopes, ambitions and loyalties that existed before their later distance.

Friedman’s interpretation also resists treating Franklin as the sole point of interest. The story may lead toward his choices, but Mary and Charley are not simply witnesses to his rise. Their distinct bonds with him give the friendship its changing shape, and the revival’s force depends on feeling the trio as a trio—not just tracking one man’s career.
Friedman told the Associated Press in June 2024 that, when she first read the script and was asked to direct it, “I was like, well, who knew? Everything was leading to Frank.” Her observation captures a useful tension: Franklin’s trajectory organizes the plot, while the emotional question belongs to all three friends.
How do the performances and score support the story?
Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe and Lindsay Mendez
Jonathan Groff plays Franklin, Daniel Radcliffe plays Charley and Lindsay Mendez plays Mary. The casting puts the shifting friendship in the foreground: the roles need to register not only their characters’ changing circumstances but also the remnants of familiarity that survive those changes. The revival’s central achievement is the way the trio’s intimacy gives the reverse chronology feeling and consequence.
Sondheim’s songs as memory and argument
The score moves between friendship, artistic collaboration and compromise. Songs including “Old Friends,” “Franklin Shepard, Inc.,” “Not a Day Goes By,” “Good Thing Going,” “Opening Doors” and “Our Time” trace different pressures on the characters, from shared creative beginnings to the pull of ambition and the memory of what they wanted to make together. The 2023 Broadway revival cast recording, whose booklet documents the production’s credits and history, offers a way to revisit those songs; it is the revival recording, not the original cast album. The official recording page lists the album and songs.

Why did Merrily We Roll Along change its reputation?
The original Broadway production closed after 16 performances, according to the revival cast recording booklet. That short run is a striking part of the musical’s history, but it is not a verdict on the version audiences saw in 2023. Friedman’s Broadway production emerged through earlier productions and revisions: the documented path runs from the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2012 to the West End in 2013, New York Theatre Workshop in 2022 and Broadway in 2023. The available official account establishes that lineage without supplying a complete record of every change along the way.
The revival’s success is best understood as the result of that development meeting a clear interpretive approach. The reverse chronology now reads as a way to reveal the friendship beneath its damaged endpoint. The 2024 production won four Tony Awards from seven nominations, including Best Revival of a Musical, acting awards for Groff and Radcliffe, and Best Orchestrations for Jonathan Tunick. Those awards document the revival’s recognition; they do not, on their own, explain its artistic effect. The Tony Awards record lists its nominations and wins.

Friedman told the Associated Press that opening night brought an unusual calm: “It was the only time in my life that I felt completely calm.” She went on to say, “When you’ve directed something or in something, there’s always this mad rush of adrenaline. I had that, but I had a real quiet feeling that whatever happened, this is the show I wanted to be seeing. This is how I wanted it.” These are the director’s reflections, reported by the AP on June 4, 2024—not a claim about how every audience member experienced the show.
