Mirra Alfassa was born in Paris in 1878 and first came to Pondicherry in 1914. Her early years in India were not continuous: she left during the First World War, lived in Japan for four years, and returned to Pondicherry on 24 April 1920. The Ashram’s biographies place these journeys before her later role in organizing the Ashram.
Who was Mirra Alfassa before she became known as The Mother?
Mirra Alfassa was born in Paris on 21 February 1878. The Sri Aurobindo Ashram Delhi Branch Trust identifies her parents as Maurice Alfassa, born in Adrianople, and Mathilde Ismaloun, born in Alexandria. These details describe a family with roots beyond France; they do not alter the biographical account’s clear point that Mirra herself was born in Paris. When did Mirra Alfassa first come to India?
In 1914, Mirra travelled to Pondicherry with Paul Richard and met Sri Aurobindo. The Ashram’s life sketch describes her sailing there to meet him; an Ashram-affiliated chronology identifies 29 March 1914 as the arrival and first-meeting milestone. Pondicherry was then under French rule, unlike the present-day Indian city of Puducherry. Why did the Mother leave Pondicherry and return in 1920?
The available biographical accounts give a broad chronology rather than a detailed itinerary: after the First World War began, Mirra returned to France with Paul Richard, and she later spent four years in Japan. The accounts establish this departure and time abroad but do not provide enough detail here to reconstruct individual journeys or explain every decision behind them. #1 Best Overall
She returned to Pondicherry on 24 April 1920. In his autobiographical notes, Sri Aurobindo connected her return with his decision to give her a wider role in organizing the Ashram. Sri Aurobindo, Autobiographical Notes and Other Writings of Historical Interest
How did her role in the Ashram develop?
The Ashram life sketch dates its formation to November 1926 and says Sri Aurobindo entrusted its full material and spiritual charge to Mirra. That later responsibility should not be confused with her first visit in 1914 or the broader organizing role associated with her return in 1920: the sources describe distinct points in a chronology spanning several years. The biographies cited here establish that she was born in Paris and describe her early travel from France to Pondicherry, followed by a return to France during the First World War period. Her parents’ reported birthplaces were Adrianople and Alexandria. These facts support describing her as French-born, but they do not by themselves settle every question of nationality, legal status, or personal identity. The colonial setting also matters: Pondicherry was French-ruled when she first visited, while it is now part of India.
