In the TV series, the answer changes over time. Marinette initially loves Adrien, while Adrien is drawn to Ladybug; neither knows the other’s secret identity. Season 5 material describes a shift: Marinette begins developing feelings for Cat Noir, and Adrien grows more interested in Marinette as his attraction to Ladybug fades. The official season 6 overview does not confirm where their romance ultimately stands.
Why their feelings form a “love square”
Marinette and Adrien each live two lives: as classmates, they are Marinette and Adrien; when they transform, they become Ladybug and Cat Noir. The official series overview says neither initially knows the other’s identity. That separation matters: affection for Adrien does not automatically mean Marinette feels the same way about Cat Noir, and Adrien’s attraction to Ladybug is distinct from his feelings for Marinette. Miraculous Corp’s series overview introduces the characters and premise.
| Character | Civilian identity | Superhero identity | Early attraction |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marinette | Marinette | Ladybug | Adrien |
| Adrien | Adrien | Cat Noir | Ladybug |
The result is an uneven four-way pattern rather than a simple mutual crush: each teen is attracted to one side of the other person’s life while keeping their own superhero identity secret.
How the TV-series romance develops
Seasons 1–3: Marinette loves Adrien; Adrien is drawn to Ladybug
By season 3, Marinette and Adrien have become close friends, but Marinette struggles to tell him how she feels. The season synopsis also brings Kagami’s growing presence in Adrien’s life into the picture, adding pressure to Marinette’s private feelings and to the heroes’ work. The official season 3 synopsis frames these tensions without making the identity barrier disappear.

Season 5: attractions begin to shift
In season 5, episode 6, “Determination,” Marinette tries to convince herself that she should stop loving Adrien because her feelings distract her from being a superhero. The episode synopsis says she then discovers feelings for another boy; it also says Adrien is increasingly interested in Marinette and wonders whether she could be more than a friend. The episode synopsis establishes that change in direction.
A TF1 Pro announcement dated 2022-10-04 identifies Marinette’s new interest as Cat Noir and describes Adrien recognizing romantic feelings for Marinette as his interest in Ladybug fades. That is broadcaster framing for the season 5 shift, not a definitive update on the current season. TF1 Pro’s announcement makes the intended change explicit.

“Transmission”: secret identities still block romance
Season 5, episode 10, “Transmission,” makes the obstacle plain: “It’s the same thing every time. Be it as Marinette and Adrien or as Ladybug and Cat Noir, our heroes’ secret identities always prevent them from having a romance.” The official synopsis says Tikki and Plagg see their holders giving up on their feelings. This describes the problem in both civilian and superhero roles; it does not establish that the pair has resolved it. Read the official “Transmission” synopsis.
Do Adrien and Marinette get together?
The sources establish romantic interest and a season 5 shift, but not a definitive latest couple status. Miraculous Corp’s current series page identifies season 6 as current and season 7 as coming soon; its season 6 overview focuses on Ladybug losing the Miracle Box and the heroes growing stronger together, rather than settling the romance. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the season 5 developments as a confirmed season 6 resolution. The official series page is the relevant season overview.

Is the movie romance the same story?
No: the feature film is a separate adaptation, so its synopsis should not be used to fill gaps in the TV-series timeline. The official movie synopsis says Marinette has fallen for her shy classmate Adrien without knowing he is Cat Noir. That supports the film’s version of the premise, but does not establish the television characters’ later season-by-season developments. See the official film synopsis.
