Mina Starsiak Hawk announced in March 2020 that her sister-in-law, Stefanie Hawk, had died unexpectedly. Her original message did not name a cause of death; Mina and her husband, Steve Hawk, discussed ethanol poisoning publicly in 2023, according to later reporting.
Who was Stefanie Hawk?
Stefanie was Steve Hawk’s sister and the sister-in-law of Mina Starsiak Hawk, the star of Good Bones. Mina’s announcement remembered her as a bright presence in the family’s lives.
What did Mina say when she announced Stefanie’s death?
In a March 2020 Instagram post, Mina wrote, “There’s no easy way to share this. Yesterday we unexpectedly lost my sister, Stefanie Hawk.” She described Stefanie as “such a bright light in all of our lives for such a long time.” The post came during COVID-19 restrictions; Mina said the family could not hold a gathering at that time. What happened to Stefanie Hawk?
Mina’s March 2020 announcement did not state a cause of death. In September 2023, Yahoo Entertainment reported that Mina and Steve discussed ethanol poisoning in an episode of Mina’s podcast. How Mina remembered the news and Stefanie’s love of animals
In Good Bones: New Beginnings, Mina later recalled receiving the news while working at the family’s Indianapolis store. Her original announcement also remembered Stefanie’s love for her dogs and animal rescue, and asked people who wanted to send flowers to donate to The Asher House instead.
Steve’s birthday remembrance
On January 16, 2026—what would have been Stefanie’s 37th birthday—Steve shared a remembrance. Mina commented on the photograph. TV Insider reported on the post and noted Stefanie’s would-have-been age: TV Insider’s report.
