How much did A Minecraft Movie make opening weekend?
Guinness World Records lists the worldwide three-day opening at $313.7 million; it says The Numbers verified that total. Box Office Mojo lists the domestic weekend gross at $162,753,003 for April 4–6, 2025. Guinness rounds the U.S. figure to $162.75 million.

Those are the later record figures, not the first Sunday estimates. On April 6, 2025, the Associated Press reported preliminary estimates of $157 million domestically and $301 million worldwide. The figures differ because they refer to the initial estimates and the later reported totals, respectively.
What record did the movie break?
The record is for the opening weekend of a movie based on a videogame. Before A Minecraft Movie, the domestic three-day opening benchmark belonged to The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which the Associated Press reported opened to about $146 million in 2023. The domestic comparison is roughly $162.75 million versus $146 million; it should not be confused with worldwide totals or openings measured over a different number of days.

The opening-weekend record is not the same as the lifetime-gross record. Guinness World Records named The Super Mario Bros. Movie the highest-grossing videogame-based film overall as of February 19, 2025. Box Office Mojo currently lists A Minecraft Movie’s worldwide lifetime gross at $960,387,780, a figure that can be updated; a large opening alone does not make it the all-time lifetime-gross leader.
Why opening-weekend comparisons can be confusing
- Geography: Domestic means the U.S. figure; worldwide includes international markets.
- Time window: The record figures cited here cover three days. A five-day total is not directly comparable to a three-day opening.
- Estimate or later total: Sunday estimates can differ from totals reported later, as the opening-day estimates and listed figures show.
- Source and date: Guinness identifies the worldwide record, Box Office Mojo gives the detailed weekend listing, and AP reported contemporary estimates and comparisons. Database totals may change over time.
Release and audience context
Box Office Mojo lists an April 4, 2025 release by Warner Bros., a PG rating and a runtime of 1 hour 41 minutes. It lists a reported production budget of $150 million; AP likewise reported that cost, excluding marketing and promotion. AP described the film as a Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. co-production.

- Runtime: 101 minutes
For the opening, AP reported 4,263 domestic locations and 36,000 international screens. Its audience findings were a B+ CinemaScore and 4/5 stars in PostTrak exit polls; AP also reported that about 62% of the audience was male and 64% was under age 25. Those figures describe the reported opening audience, not every viewer.
