Testing found a lethal amount of carboxyhemoglobin, the compound formed when carbon monoxide binds to hemoglobin. The finding was announced on April 2, 2025, and reported by MLB the next day.
What officials reported about Miller Gardner’s death
Miller died on March 21, 2025, while vacationing with his family in Costa Rica. Costa Rican officials said testing showed a lethal amount of carboxyhemoglobin, supporting the reported cause of death: carbon monoxide poisoning. MLB reported the officials’ finding on April 3, 2025.
What the family said at the time
Brett and Jessica Gardner and the New York Yankees announced Miller’s death on March 23. The family said Miller and several relatives had fallen ill during the trip, and that they did not yet have answers. They asked for privacy, saying: “Please respect our wishes for privacy as we mourn and search for healing.” The family statement was distributed by MLB.
What happened after officials announced the cause
Investigators continued examining the hotel circumstances
The cause-of-death finding did not by itself determine how the carbon monoxide exposure occurred or who, if anyone, was responsible. The Associated Press reported on September 12, 2025, that authorities had raided the hotel a second time; an earlier inspection had detected carbon monoxide in the room. AP also reported that no one had been charged as of that date. Read the AP report on the hotel investigation.

The family later filed a civil claim

What is and is not established
The reported official cause was carbon monoxide poisoning. The available reports cited here do not establish a final outcome for the investigation or the family’s civil claim. Miller’s family described his death as occurring peacefully in his sleep; that statement is not a separate medical explanation for the cause of death.
