The headline refers to two separate Instagram incidents, not one: a May 2015 selfie described by E! and a February 2020 post following Miley Cyrus’s appearance at the Marc Jacobs runway show in New York. The dates matter because the images, captions and circumstances differ.
What happened in the May 2015 Instagram selfie?
In a report published May 27, 2015, E!’s McKenna Aiello described a selfie of Cyrus wearing a loose white tank top. E! said an exposure was visible in the image’s right-hand corner and reproduced the caption as “Tell me whatzzzz yo flava???” The outlet reported that Cyrus posted it at 5:31 a.m. PDT and shared additional images from the same photo session, including ones featuring colorful wigs. What was the separate 2020 wardrobe malfunction?
E! and Fox News reported a different incident connected to Cyrus’s attendance at the Marc Jacobs show during New York Fashion Week. E! said the wardrobe malfunction happened as she entered the Bowery Hotel on February 12, 2020, and that Cyrus later shared a series of photos that included the incident. Fox News likewise described a three-photo series, with the exposure in the final image. E!’s February 13, 2020 report · Fox News’ February 13, 2020 report

E! transcribed the caption as “Swipe right,” followed by “But hurry. Instagram will definitely be removing this post soon.” Fox News included a period after “right” in its transcription: “Swipe right . But hurry. Instagram will definitely be removing this post soon.” These are the outlets’ reported transcriptions; the original post was not directly checked.

- The May 2015 story concerns a loose white tank-top selfie and the caption “Tell me whatzzzz yo flava???”
- The February 2020 story concerns a separate photo series shared after the Marc Jacobs show, with a caption warning that Instagram would remove the post.
- “X-rated” is headline wording, not a formal classification established by either report.
Both E! and Fox News discussed Instagram’s nudity rules as they understood them in February 2020. E! said the post had been live for 13 hours when its report was published; Fox News noted exceptions involving post-mastectomy scarring and active breastfeeding. Those details describe coverage and platform context at that time, not a verification of Instagram’s current policy or the posts’ present availability.
