Mike Lynch’s body was found after the yacht Bayesian sank off Sicily on 19 August 2024. His death was confirmed on 22 August, according to reporting on a UK inquest hearing. The sinking killed seven of the 22 people aboard. The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) published an interim report in May 2025, but said its analysis was not complete enough to establish the accident’s cause.
When was Mike Lynch found?
Lynch’s death was confirmed on 22 August 2024, after his body was found, according to reporting from the UK inquest hearing on 4 October 2024. The report said his provisional medical cause of death was recorded as drowning. That was information presented at the hearing, not a final finding on why the yacht sank.
The Bayesian foundered on the morning of 19 August off Porticello, Sicily. Lynch was among six guests who died; a crew member also died. The other 15 people aboard survived.
What happened to the Bayesian?
The UK-registered sailing yacht had been off the northern Sicilian coast near Cefalù. With thunderstorms forecast and winds increasing, its crew moved toward Porticello to seek shelter. The NTSB’s public timeline says it anchored east of the port’s main breakwater at about 21:24 local time on 18 August.

Rain began early on 19 August, and the wind strengthened. The NTSB timeline says the yacht began listing to starboard, then heeled 90 degrees to starboard at about 04:06 as winds rose above 70 knots. It sank in roughly 165 feet of water. The crew released a liferaft, and a nearby yacht’s crew recovered survivors.
These event details are from the NTSB’s public timeline. The NTSB identifies the MAIB as the lead safety-investigation authority; its timeline is not a final MAIB finding about the cause.

What have investigators officially concluded?
The MAIB’s report, published on 14 May 2025, is explicitly interim. The agency said initial studies indicated the yacht may have been vulnerable to high winds, but that the circumstances had not yet undergone full analysis to draw conclusions and identify safety issues.
“This is an interim report. The circumstances of the accident have not yet been subjected to a full analysis from which to draw conclusions and identify safety issues.”

That distinction matters: the sinking, deaths and recovery of Lynch’s body are documented, but the interim report does not establish a final cause of the accident. A possible vulnerability to high winds is not the same as a concluded causal finding.

The Associated Press reported that the Bayesian’s hull was lifted from the sea on 21 June 2025 and prepared for investigators. The mast had been detached and left on the seabed for later removal. Recovering the hull made it available for further examination; it did not, by itself, establish the cause of the sinking or responsibility.
