Mike Tyson has recalled fighting a boy who killed one of his pigeons when Tyson was a child. Tyson described it as the first time he threw a punch; later accounts often call it his first fight. The details differ between published versions, so the incident is best understood as Tyson’s recollection rather than an independently verified account.
What Tyson said happened
In a 2011 interview with TIME, Tyson was asked whether his first fight was because of a pigeon. He answered: “Somebody tried to steal my pigeon and broke its neck and hit me in the face with the dead bird. I fought him–just flailing away. I hit him more than he hit me, so I guess I won. That’s how it goes.”
A 2011 Los Angeles Times article recounts a different version: an older boy took a pigeon Tyson was carrying home, and after Tyson pleaded for its return, the boy twisted the bird’s head off. Tyson then fought him. The article quotes Tyson saying, “That was the first time I threw a punch.”
The two accounts agree on the central point—Tyson said he fought after a boy killed one of his pigeons—but differ on how the bird was killed and what happened immediately afterward. Those details should not be blended into a single definitive version.

Was it Tyson’s first fight?
Tyson’s Los Angeles Times quotation is precise: he called it the first time he threw a punch. TIME framed the anecdote as his first fight, and Tyson answered within that framing. Calling it “his first fight” is a common shorthand, but “the first time he threw a punch” is the wording directly attributed to him by the Los Angeles Times.
How the story has been retold
A Sports Illustrated excerpt from Tyson’s book Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D’Amato also gives his first-person account: a boy stole and killed one of his birds, and a friend urged him to fight. Read the Sports Illustrated excerpt. The New Yorker’s 2011 feature “Feathers” offers another narrative rendering of Tyson’s account and its interview context; it is additional reporting, not contemporaneous proof of the childhood event.

Tyson’s later connection to pigeons
Tyson’s interest in pigeons continued into adulthood. The Los Angeles Times reported on his competitive pigeon racing and the Animal Planet series Taking on Tyson. That later history helps explain why pigeons remained a meaningful subject for him, but it does not independently confirm what happened in the childhood story.
