What did Tyson say to the fans?
In the immediate aftermath, Tyson apologized to people who had paid to attend. ABC News / AFP quoted him saying, “I’m sorry for the fans who paid for this,” followed by, “I wish I could have done better.”
Why did Tyson stop fighting?
Tyson said he no longer had the heart or courage to continue and did not want to disrespect boxing by carrying on. The Washington Post reported him saying, “I just don’t have this in my gut anymore,” and, “It’s just not in my heart anymore.” It also quoted him saying, “My career was over in 1990,” and, “I’m finished.” Those were remarks made after the 2005 bout, not a statement that the McBride fight had taken place in 1990.

McBride was Tyson’s last professional opponent. The Associated Press later described Tyson’s 2020 bout with Roy Jones Jr. as an exhibition, distinguishing it from a professional fight. The AP’s 2024 account says Tyson retired after losing to McBride in 2005; therefore, “last professional fight” is more precise than saying he never boxed in any later event.
