Tyson sued King for $100 million, alleging years of financial deception; King denied the claims and countersued. The case settled in 2004, without a public court ruling resolving the accusations.
How Tyson and King became business partners
In October 1988, the Los Angeles Times described Tyson as King’s promotional partner and reported that King had signed him to an exclusive promotional contract. The article also reflected contemporary questions about how the arrangement had come together.
The connection involved more than fight promotion. In Tyson’s 1998 complaint, he described King and King’s companies as having served as his manager, confidant, adviser and promoter from 1988 to 1998, according to CBS News’ account of the lawsuit. Those roles were Tyson’s characterization in his filing, not a judicial finding.
Why the relationship broke down
The partnership was not an uninterrupted alliance. The Washington Post reported in 1998 that the pair had separated and reunited before. Tyson’s suit marked another rupture: he sought to cancel a contract that was due to run through 1999.

In 1998, Tyson filed a lawsuit seeking $100 million in damages. As CBS reported, he alleged that King had cheated him of tens of millions of dollars over more than a decade. That figure was the amount Tyson sought, not money a court found King owed.

Tyson’s complaint accused King of defrauding him during their long business relationship. The allegations were made in litigation and should not be treated as established fact: the case did not proceed to a public judgment deciding whether they were true.

King’s response and counterclaim
King denied Tyson’s accusations and filed a counterclaim. Sports Business Journal reported that King sought more than $110 million, tying his claim to Tyson’s conduct and alleged breach of contract. That amount, too, was a party’s demand—not a court’s determination of liability or damages.

The dispute settled out of court in 2004. Contemporary ABC News reporting in Australia put the settlement at A$20 million. Biography.com’s account of Tyson gives a figure of US$14 million, though the publication date for that page was not supplied with the reported figure. These are different currencies and source accounts; they should not be combined as though they were the same quoted amount.

The settlement resolved the litigation, but the publicly available accounts cited here do not provide the settlement agreement or establish that either side admitted liability. It therefore does not prove Tyson’s allegations or King’s counterclaims.
