In 2015, Mayweather made a case for his place among boxing’s greatest and compared himself favorably with Muhammad Ali. Tyson objected to the comparison and Mayweather’s claim to greatness. In an interview with the Undisputed Champion Network, Tyson called Mayweather “very delusional,” according to the Los Angeles Times’ April 30, 2015 report. The newspaper also reported Tyson calling Mayweather a “small, scared man.” Those were Tyson’s pointed opinions in a dispute about boxing greatness, not evidence by themselves of enduring personal hatred.
Is there really a 22-year feud?
The available reporting documents the sharp public exchange in 2015, not a feud that began 22 years earlier. The “22-year” description is not supported by the cited accounts, which do not establish an earlier origin. The documented flashpoint is an argument about legacy and the comparison with Ali.
What has Tyson said about whether it is personal?
In January 2026, when asked about the matchup, Tyson said he had a “pretty decent relationship” with Mayweather, adding, “I don’t hate him” and “I don’t have any harsh feelings,” The Ring reported on January 19, 2026. The report framed a possible bout as a chance to settle a beef, but Tyson’s own response did not describe personal hatred.

In a March 10, 2026 interview, Tyson was more explicit: “I have no animosity. We’re just boxing. We’re two fighters. We’re boxing,” The Ring reported. He also acknowledged Mayweather’s standing, saying, “He definitely reigns with the greats, there’s no doubt. He put in his work.” These later remarks complicate any portrayal of the pair as enemies.
Do the exhibition’s taunts prove they hate each other?
No. Promotional language around an announced exhibition was combative, but it cannot establish what either man privately feels. In September 2025, Tyson said the proposed fight would be “detrimental to his health,” while Mayweather said no fighter could tarnish his legacy and called himself “the best in the business of boxing,” the Los Angeles Times reported. Sky Sports also covered the announcement and promotional remarks. Such talk helps sell a spectacle; it is not proof of a private feud.

Why the greatness argument is complicated
Tyson and Mayweather built their reputations in different divisions and eras, so their careers cannot be reduced to a single head-to-head measure. The Los Angeles Times described Tyson as an undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1990 and reported Mayweather’s 50-0 professional record, 27 knockouts, and championship titles across five weight classes. Those distinctions provide context for the argument, but a record or title count alone does not settle an all-time-great debate.
