Mike Tyson reportedly reacted with disbelief to footage of Deontay Wilder confronting Charlie Zelenoff in a gym, saying the incident could have sent Wilder to prison. The gym footage is reported to date from around 2014; Tyson’s discussion came years later on Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson.
What the video shows
The clip discussed by Tyson depicts Wilder and Zelenoff in a gym. A 2021 report described Wilder confronting Zelenoff after a period of online provocation. Later accounts connect that provocation to comments about Wilder’s family. Those details are reported context, not independently confirmed findings. uFight.gr’s June 20, 2021 report and World Boxing News’ June 12, 2025 retrospective recount the episode.
The title’s description of Zelenoff as a racist internet troll reflects the way the story has been framed; the available accounts do not establish a full, independently verified account of the dispute or the video’s circumstances.
What Mike Tyson reportedly said
In the 2021 account, Tyson was surprised that Wilder had actually confronted Zelenoff and said that he himself would have gone to prison for doing something similar. The report also attributes to Tyson the impression that the footage looked as if Wilder was trying to kill Zelenoff. A shorter 2025 retrospective repeats the prison remark.
