The film’s best idea is also its main comic engine—Vince Vaughn’s Nick has to contend with a future version of himself—but the result is a knowingly unruly action-comedy rather than a neatly calibrated thriller. Its energy and cast give the odd premise real appeal; its 107-minute runtime tests how long that appeal can carry the story.
What is Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice about?
Written and directed by BenDavid Grabinski, the R-rated film centers on Mike, Nick and Alice, whose relationships are caught up in a perilous night involving a time machine. The studio’s official description frames it as two gangsters and the woman they love trying to survive, with time travel making matters more complicated.
The spoiler-light version of the time-travel setup is that gangster Nick goes back to intervene in events involving his friend and colleague Mike. As the Associated Press explains in its review, the story spends much of its time with two Nicks: the one already in the night’s events and a future Nick who arrives to change them. That doubling gives the title its extra Nick and supplies the film with a built-in source of friction, without requiring a full account of how the plot unfolds.
Does Vince Vaughn make the two-Nick premise work?
Vaughn’s central task is to make the two versions of Nick feel like more than a time-travel gimmick. The premise invites comedy from a character confronting his own choices, while the danger around Mike and Alice gives those encounters a purpose beyond one-liners. The film leans into the contrast and lets Vaughn’s familiar fast-talking comic presence set the pace of its exchanges.

The surrounding cast helps keep the movie from becoming a solo showcase. James Marsden plays Mike and Eiza González plays Alice, with Keith David, Jimmy Tatro, Stephen Root, Lewis Tan, Ben Schwartz, Emily Hampshire and Arturo Castro also in the cast, according to the studio listing. The triangle gives the chaos an emotional anchor, though the movie’s most immediately distinctive relationship is Nick with himself.
Do the comedy, action and time travel fit together?
They fit by escalation more than by restraint. The time machine pushes a gangster-night setup into a deliberately absurd register; the action supplies physical stakes, and the comedy punctures the seriousness before it can settle. The AP review praises the film’s precise banter, energetic action and cast’s willingness to embrace the material. It also points to conspicuous tonal signals, including a discussion of Gilmore Girls and an opening set to “Why Should I Worry?” Those choices make clear that this is not aiming for a sober crime thriller.

The trade-off is that adding a time loop’s complications does not automatically make each complication more interesting. The mechanism creates opportunities for comic reversals and raises the pressure around the characters, but the film can feel busy when its plot machinery competes with its relationships and action. Viewers who enjoy genre collisions and a movie that keeps changing gears are more likely to find that unruliness part of the fun; anyone looking for tightly controlled time-travel logic may be less satisfied.
Is the 107-minute runtime earned?
At 1 hour 47 minutes, or 107 minutes, the film has room for its ensemble, action sequences and repeated encounters between the two Nicks. The AP review’s main reservation is that it runs overlong, and that criticism points to the central pacing question: the premise is strong enough to launch the film, but not every extension of the chaos adds equal momentum. The movie’s energetic stretches help, yet its length makes the balance between fresh escalation and repetition especially noticeable.

What do reviewers think?
The available critical responses do not establish a consensus. The AP gives the film two and a half stars out of four, praising its banter, action and cast while faulting its length; that is AP’s individual rating, not an aggregate score. The Guardian calls it a “middling time travel comedy,” offering a more reserved counterpoint. The split is understandable: the same broad, busy mix that makes the film distinctive can also make it feel overstuffed.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
This is a good fit for viewers drawn to comic crime stories, conspicuous pop-culture detours and action that does not take itself too seriously. Vaughn’s double role and the time-travel hook provide a clear reason to watch, while Marsden and González help keep the central triangle in view. It is a less obvious pick for someone who prioritizes economical pacing or an intricate, rigorously explained time-travel puzzle over performance and tonal mayhem.
