Bernardeau’s departure was publicly announced in July 2021, after season 4. He said goodbye to the show and role in a farewell video shared by the official Élite account, as reported by 20minutos/Cinemanía on July 19, 2021 and RTL Boulevard on July 20, 2021.
What did Bernardeau say in his farewell?
Bernardeau described making the series as a rewarding experience that was not always easy. In the Spanish-language wording quoted by 20minutos/Cinemanía, he said: “Grabar la serie no ha sido fácil. Estoy muy agradecido.” He thanked the people involved and addressed his character directly: “Gracias Guzmán por enseñarme que, seas quien seas, estés donde estés, nunca es tarde para cambiar.”

The message connects Guzmán’s departure to a theme of personal change, but it is Bernardeau’s reflection on the character—not an explanation of a behind-the-scenes dispute or a claim that the story ended for one particular reason.
How did he reflect on the role later?
In a GQ España interview published December 23, 2021, Bernardeau spoke about the value of both the character and the series, and about knowing when to finish a chapter. Read the GQ España interview.

The July farewell and December interview are distinct moments: the first marked his exit publicly; the later conversation looked back on what the role had meant to him. A December 2021 report said he had not played Guzmán for a year and a half, so that remark should be understood as his account at the time, not as a current update.

In December 2020, while Bernardeau was filming season 4, RTVE reported that he had spoken about anxiety over whether he would continue working after Élite. The report also described Playa negra as a surf-world project then in development, with filming planned for 2021. Those statements reflect the plans and concerns reported at that time, not confirmation of his later career or the reason for leaving Élite. See RTVE/Playz’s December 29, 2020 report.
