Mighty Mary is a documentary about the women’s 1995 America’s Cup defender campaign, led by captain Dawn Riley. Among the sailors was Merritt Carey of Yarmouth, Maine. The film’s official page lists a theatrical opening on September 11, 2026, and a Portland Press Herald report announced a November 5, 2026 screening and panel at the University of Southern Maine; check current listings before making plans.
What is the Mighty Mary documentary about?
Directed by Mary Mazzio, Mighty Mary tells the story of the women’s campaign that competed in the 1995 America’s Cup defender selection series under the America³ campaign. Dawn Riley captained the effort. The film’s official page credits Elizabeth Banks and Hugh Jackman as narrators and describes the group as “the first all-women’s sailing team to contend for the famed America’s Cup.” 50 Eggs Films’ official film page
The 1995 effort is significant in the Cup’s history: the America’s Cup’s official account calls it “a ground-breaking moment for female athletes in the America’s Cup.” America’s Cup: Women in the America’s Cup

Was there an all-women’s America’s Cup team?
The 1995 campaign is commonly described as an all-women’s effort and was a landmark for women in Cup sailing. The available accounts do not establish a complete crew roster for every race, so it is more precise to call it an all-women’s campaign or a women’s team than to imply that an identical all-women crew sailed every race.
It is also distinct from the Puig Women’s America’s Cup, a standalone women’s regatta introduced in 2024. The America’s Cup described that event as taking place during the competition’s 173-year history; World Sailing reported 12 competing teams. The later regatta was intended to create a pathway into elite Cup sailing, but it is not the subject of Mighty Mary. America’s Cup: Puig Women’s America’s Cup World Sailing: 2024 event overview
