That closed the storefront, not the Movies & TV playback app: Microsoft says previously purchased titles remain accessible through the app on Windows and Xbox.
There is no general tool to transfer those purchases to another retailer, and Microsoft does not promise that access will last forever. Its published policy generally excludes refunds for movies and TV shows.
What Microsoft shut down
Microsoft ended new movie and TV sales and rentals through Microsoft.com, the Microsoft Store on Windows and the Microsoft Store on Xbox. The reported effective date was July 18, 2025. The broader Microsoft Store remains available for other products, and Xbox game sales are separate from movie and TV sales.
Microsoft’s current Movies & TV support guidance says new entertainment content is no longer available for purchase, while the Movies & TV app remains the access point for prior purchases. As of August 2026, that guidance still names Windows and Xbox. It does not establish support on phones, browsers, smart TVs or other consoles.

What happens to movies and shows you already bought
Microsoft says customers can continue to access previously purchased movies and TV shows in the Movies & TV app on Windows or Xbox. This is the company’s current published position—not a guarantee that every title will remain available indefinitely. Digital goods are licensed under Microsoft’s rules and may be subject to account, device, territory and rights restrictions.
- Purchased title: Look for it in the Movies & TV app while signed in with the account that bought it.
- Downloaded purchase: Microsoft says downloaded playback continues to be supported on Windows, with downloads available in HD at maximum resolution. A download is still protected content, not a freely transferable video file.
- Personal video: Personal files playable on Xbox are distinct from movies and shows purchased through Microsoft.
- Rental: A rental is not a purchase; if its viewing period has expired, it should not be expected to remain available as part of a purchased library.
Microsoft’s digital-goods usage rules describe licensing and restrictions on copying or moving retained-rights video. Availability may also vary by territory and title, including episodes in a TV season.
How to open your existing library
- Open the Movies & TV app on a Windows PC or Xbox.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account used for the purchase.
- Open the app’s purchased-library area and select the title. Check there rather than relying only on search in the general Microsoft Store.
- On Windows, use the app’s download option for a title that supports offline playback.
- If the title is missing or will not play, check the purchase record and contact Microsoft Support with the order details.
Microsoft continues to identify Movies & TV—not Media Player—as the app for previously purchased content. The support guidance confirms the app and platforms, but does not guarantee that every current version has identical library labels or menus.

Can you download or back up the movies?
Microsoft says downloads remain available on Windows for supported titles. Its Windows help page says content could be downloaded to up to five devices and redownloaded; separate service rules can contain limits and exceptions. Do not treat five devices as a universal current entitlement for every title, platform or account. See Microsoft’s device-association guidance for the Windows-specific details.
Downloading is useful for offline playback, but it does not create an archival copy. The video remains protected by licensing and device rules; Microsoft says users may not copy or move retained-rights video from its original stored location. Device registration, compatible software, territory and license validation can affect playback. Xbox downloads have additional login and device conditions in Microsoft’s usage rules.
Can you transfer a Microsoft purchase to another service?
No direct transfer is offered. Microsoft says purchased content cannot be moved directly to another service. There is no general Microsoft export or migration tool that turns a purchase into an entitlement at Apple, Amazon or Fandango at Home, and a download is not an unrestricted file you can move between retailers.

Third-party linking programs, where available, are separate from transferring the Microsoft license. Eligibility can depend on title and region, so do not assume a Microsoft purchase will appear in another service’s library.
Can you get a refund?
Microsoft’s Movies & TV guidance says movies and TV shows are generally ineligible for refunds under its Store Terms of Sale. Its general digital-goods refund guidance likewise says digital purchases are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes them eligible. No automatic refund program for the storefront closure has been announced.
That policy does not mean a refund is legally impossible in every location or circumstance. An unauthorized purchase, billing error, local consumer-protection law or case-by-case support decision may provide a different route. Subscription refund rules do not automatically apply to an individual movie or TV purchase. For a disputed charge, check the order and contact Microsoft Support rather than assuming reimbursement.

If a purchase is missing or will not play
These are checks to try, not confirmed explanations for every library problem:
- The library looks empty: Verify the signed-in Microsoft account and purchase history. A household member may have bought the title under a different account.
- The title is absent: Confirm it was purchased rather than rented, and consider whether current-region rights or a title-specific rights issue could affect availability.
- The app cannot find or play it: Try Movies & TV on Windows or Xbox rather than Media Player or the general Store; then check for app or operating-system updates.
- A download fails: Device registration, license data, software changes or territorial restrictions can affect protected playback.
- The order exists but access does not: Contact Microsoft Support with the title, order details and account information.
Some users have reported playback problems in Microsoft community discussions. Those reports are anecdotal and do not establish a Microsoft-wide replacement of Movies & TV or a universal loss of libraries.
Where to buy movies and shows now
Microsoft identifies Amazon Prime Video, the Apple TV Store and Fandango at Home among transactional entertainment services available in the Windows and Xbox ecosystem. Each sells or rents eligible titles subject to its own catalog, device support, account terms and regional availability. Check that a service works on the screen you use most and that the specific title is offered there before buying. None should be treated as a source of unrestricted video files.

If your Microsoft purchase still plays on your Windows PC or Xbox, switching services does not require buying it again; it also will not transfer the old license. For long-term access without dependence on a digital storefront, physical Blu-ray or 4K UHD discs are a more vendor-independent option, at the cost of storage and a compatible player.
What this says about digital purchases
A digital “purchase” is not necessarily ownership of a permanent, portable file. Under Microsoft’s rules, digital goods are licensed and can depend on the account, compatible app, device, DRM, territory and continuing rights. The storefront closure has not been announced as deletion of existing libraries, but it illustrates why digital purchases are less portable than discs or unrestricted files.
Before buying elsewhere, compare the service’s support for your devices, offline playback, region, refund terms and any title-specific cross-service linking. Choose a retailer for the devices and access terms it supports—not on the assumption that a digital library can always be exported later.
