The first reviews of Mickey 17 praised Robert Pattinson’s comic, emotionally layered performance and Bong Joon Ho’s strange mix of science-fiction spectacle and social satire. The response was not unanimous: some critics found the film exhilarating, while others thought its jokes and political ideas were too broad or uneven to match Bong’s strongest work. These are reactions from the film’s February 2025 review moment, not a live summary of every review now.
What are critics saying about Mickey 17?
In its first-reviews roundup, Rotten Tomatoes captured the split: a big, entertaining spectacle with strong performances, but one that falls short of the director’s best. Critics disagreed about the film’s political sharpness and place in Bong Joon Ho’s filmography, so the early reception is better described as positive but mixed than as a consensus that it is a new masterpiece.
David Opie of Total Film called it “Bong Joon-ho’s best English movie to date.” By contrast, Hugh Montgomery of the BBC wrote, “All in all, it must be considered a serious disappointment from the director.” Those opposing judgments show why comparisons with Bong’s earlier films depend on what a viewer values: its exuberant entertainment or the precision of its ideas.
Why did reviewers praise Robert Pattinson?
Pattinson plays Mickey Barnes, an expendable worker sent on an off-world colonization mission. When one version of Mickey dies, a new iteration is printed, forcing the character—and the people around him—to confront what it means to treat a person as replaceable. The premise gives Pattinson several versions of the same role to distinguish.

Critics singled out his physical comedy, shifts in tone, and the emotional differences he brings to the numbered Mickeys. Pete Hammond of Deadline described him as “a revelation here… a hilarious performance that takes on new dimension as the story progresses.” Opie, also writing for Total Film, said, “Robert Pattinson is a blast to watch as he plays different characters.”
What is the film satirizing?
The reviews describe Mickey 17 as a blend of dark comedy, science-fiction spectacle, and social satire. Its disposable-worker premise opens onto questions of class and exploitation, while critics also read the story as a jab at greed, capitalism, authoritarian power, and populist politics.

Some reviewers found those targets pointed and the film’s odd mixture of absurdity and sentiment effective. David Ehrlich of IndieWire wrote, “This isn’t just another great Bong Joon Ho movie about how much he hates capitalism (though it definitely is that too), it’s the first Bong Joon Ho movie about how much he loves people.” Others felt that the political critique was blunt or that the spectacle and wackiness crowded out the ideas. David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter argued, “The intriguing concept of recyclable people gets bumped aside too often in favor of a clownish take on the corruption of power.”
Is Mickey 17 worth watching?
The early reviews point to a film likely to appeal to viewers who enjoy irreverent science fiction, broad dark comedy, and ambitious social themes. Pattinson’s performance is the most consistent point of praise, and the unusual premise gives the story room for both visual invention and questions about workers being treated as disposable.

Expect a less certain recommendation if you want tightly controlled satire or a film that sustains the incisiveness of Bong’s most admired work throughout. Critics differed on whether the tonal shifts make the film exciting or uneven; the first-reviews roundup presents that disagreement rather than settling it.
How does the film relate to the book?
Mickey 17 is based on Mickey7, Edward Ashton’s novel. The film adapts the same central idea of a worker whose death is followed by the creation of another version. Readers of the book may find it useful to compare how the movie handles that premise, but the early review coverage does not establish a definitive judgment about which version is better. Rotten Tomatoes’ film page identifies the novel as the source material.
