In January 2024, Michelle Trachtenberg pushed back after strangers commented that she looked sick and speculated about her appearance. She said she was 38, denied having plastic surgery and described herself as “happy and healthy.” Those were her responses to online criticism—not a medical report.

A photo of Trachtenberg with actor Alexa PenaVega, posted on Instagram on January 17, 2024, drew comments about her appearance, according to Parade. One commenter asked, “Michelle you look sick. Are you okay?”

Trachtenberg replied, “Explain to me how I look sick. Did you lose a calendar and not realise I’m not 14. I’m 38. How sad for you to leave such a comment,” The Independent reported on January 22, 2024. Her answer addressed the comparison with her younger appearance and the unsolicited comment; it did not offer a medical explanation.
What did she say about the comments?
As the comments continued, Trachtenberg addressed them and speculation about cosmetic surgery in an Instagram caption. “I’ve received several comments recently about my appearance,” she wrote. “I have never had plastic surgery I am happy and healthy. Check yourself haters.”

She followed with another selfie and the caption: “Fun fact. This is my face. Not malnutrition no problems. Why do you have you hate? Get a calendar.” The Independent reported both captions on January 22, 2024. They are Trachtenberg’s personal statements, not independently verified assessments of her health.

Trachtenberg died at age 39 in February 2025. Initial reporting said the medical examiner’s finding was undetermined after her family objected to an autopsy. More than a year after her posts, the medical examiner amended the initial finding after reviewing laboratory results. The Associated Press reported that she died from complications of diabetes; CBS reported that the manner of death was natural. Associated Press CBS News

The January 2024 exchange was about appearance criticism. The reporting does not connect her remarks to the later medical examiner’s determination or establish that she knew of, discussed or was responding to diabetes in those posts. The commenters’ speculation was not a diagnosis.
