Isabella Strahan was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor that develops in the cerebellum, in October 2023. ABC reported that she underwent surgery, radiation and chemotherapy; in a January 2025 update, the network said her doctors had declared her cancer-free in July 2024 and that she was continuing to rebuild her strength and balance. That dated update does not establish her health status today.

What kind of brain tumor did Isabella Strahan have?

Isabella said she was diagnosed with medulloblastoma in October 2023, while she was a freshman at the University of Southern California. She and her father, Michael Strahan, shared the diagnosis in a January 2024 interview with Robin Roberts on Good Morning America. Isabella said she wanted to speak about her experience to help others. (ABC / Good Morning America, January 11, 2024)

Medulloblastoma is a malignant tumor that develops in the cerebellum, a part of the brain involved in movement and coordination. That general description explains the tumor type; it is not a way to diagnose someone from symptoms. ABC reported that Isabella noticed changes including difficulty with balance and walking, nausea and other symptoms before an MRI led to her diagnosis. New or concerning neurological symptoms warrant medical attention, but symptoms alone do not establish that someone has medulloblastoma.

What treatment did she undergo?

ABC reported that Isabella had emergency surgery in October 2023, followed by rehabilitation, six weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. Her treatment took place at Duke. In a February 2024 interview, Michael said she had started chemotherapy and had been hospitalized during treatment; that was a dated update, not a description of her current condition. ABC’s January 2025 account reported that the original tumor measured 4 centimeters, Isabella underwent two additional surgeries, and she completed four rounds of chemotherapy in June 2024. These details describe her publicly reported treatment, not a treatment plan for other patients. (ABC / Good Morning America, January 22, 2025)

What does medulloblastoma mean, and how is treatment chosen?

Medulloblastoma is not one identical disease in every patient. ABC’s explainer identifies four molecular groups—SHH, WNT, Group 3 and Group 4—and says clinicians consider the tumor’s location and type, molecular group, the patient’s age, and whether the disease has spread when making treatment decisions and discussing prognosis. Treatment commonly described in the explainer includes surgery followed by radiation and chemotherapy, but an individual plan depends on clinical circumstances. (ABC / Good Morning America, January 11, 2024)

ABC reported that Isabella’s tumor was the WNT subtype. Her treating neuro-oncologist, Dr. David Ashley of Duke, said it had not spread and expressed optimism about her outcome. ABC attributed to Ashley a five-year survival figure greater than 90% for WNT medulloblastoma. That subtype-level figure is not an individual guarantee, including for Isabella. (ABC News, January 2024)

Separately, ABC’s 2024 explainer attributed to the National Cancer Institute an estimate that more than 70% of people with medulloblastoma survive at least five years. This broad population statistic is not an individualized prognosis. A person’s outlook depends on the particulars of their disease and care, and should be discussed with their clinical team. What has Isabella shared about recovery?

ABC reported that Isabella’s doctors declared her cancer-free in July 2024 and that she returned to USC in August. In a February 2025 report, ABC described her as continuing to rebuild strength and balance, with scans planned. Those are updates published in 2025; they do not establish her health status in October 2026 or later. (ABC / Good Morning America, January 22, 2025; ABC / Good Morning America, February 5, 2025)

ABC’s February 2025 report also quoted Isabella reflecting on speaking up for herself: “I learned how you should advocate for yourself.” Her comments were part of her account of a difficult diagnosis and treatment experience, not medical guidance for others. (ABC / Good Morning America, February 5, 2025)
