In his 2024 memoir Entrances and Exits, Michael Richards writes about the 2006 racist outburst that derailed his public career and the prostate cancer diagnosis he received in 2018. In interviews around the book’s release, Richards said that reflecting on mortality and his young son helped prompt him to put his life story on the page.

What Richards says about the Laugh Factory outburst

Richards, best known for playing Cosmo Kramer on Seinfeld and identified by AARP as a three-time Emmy winner for the role, addresses the racist outburst during a 2006 performance at Los Angeles’s Laugh Factory in Entrances and Exits. AARP’s June 2024 interview describes the memoir as not shying away from the incident.

The episode remains central to coverage of the book. The Los Angeles Times characterized its 2024 report as an apology in the memoir, while The Independent reported that Richards still regretted the outburst. Those are accounts of how he addresses the episode; they do not make his explanations for what happened an independent account of its causes.

Why he chose to write the memoir

Richards connected the decision to write with age, his cancer diagnosis and a desire to leave a record for his young son. In an interview excerpt attributed to Rolling Stone and republished by Hollywood411, he said he wanted the book to serve as a legacy. AARP interviewer Gayle Jo Carter also asked about the writing process. Richards told her, “I had to find my voice. I know it was there, because I have 40 years of journals that really inspired me to get a book [out] at my age.” The bracketed words appear in AARP’s rendering.

These comments explain Richards’s stated reasons for writing; they are not a claim that the book settles every question about his career or the outburst.

What Richards has said about his cancer diagnosis

Richards said he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2018. The Independent reported that a routine checkup found elevated PSA levels and that doctors diagnosed stage one cancer. In the interview excerpt reproduced by Hollywood411, Richards described undergoing surgery. The Independent’s 2024 account described him as having fought and defeated the disease at that time.

This is Richards’s personal account as reported in interviews, not medical guidance or evidence about screening, diagnosis or treatment for other people. The coverage describes a past diagnosis and surgery; it does not establish that he currently has active cancer.
