Rainey called sexual assault unacceptable regardless of gender or status. James apologized for his sister’s reported conduct and said she would not take part in future streams.
What happened to Michael Rainey Jr. on the livestream?
Contemporaneous reports said the incident took place while Rainey, known for playing Tariq St. Patrick on Power, appeared on James’ Twitch livestream on June 9, 2024. Outlets described circulated footage as showing James’ sister touching Rainey without his consent. That description is based on the reporting; it is not a court finding, and the reports do not establish the woman’s intent.
Us Weekly’s June 10, 2024, account reported the livestream context and Rainey’s response. PEOPLE’s syndicated report on Yahoo Entertainment also covered the incident and statements from Rainey’s representative and James.
What did Rainey say?
On June 10, Rainey posted a statement on Instagram Stories, according to contemporaneous coverage. He wrote, “I am still in shock and don’t fully know how to process what happened last night.” He also said, “The fact is, sexual assault is never okay, regardless of gender or status.” HOT 97 reproduced the statement, as did Us Weekly.

Separately, Rainey’s representative told PEOPLE that he was deeply saddened and shocked and was still processing what happened. This was the representative’s description of Rainey’s reaction, distinct from Rainey’s own Instagram statement.
Did TyTy James apologize?
Yes. James apologized in statements reported by PEOPLE and Capital XTRA. He said, “My little sister was completely wrong and out of line.” He also said he would take precautions with future streams and had banned her from participating in them. Those were James’ stated responses and plans; the reports do not independently establish what steps were later taken.
