The initial post-mortem findings reported on June 10, 2024, found no injuries believed to have caused Michael Mosley’s death and did not suggest suspicious circumstances. They did not establish a medical cause. In findings reported after the inquest in December 2024, a coroner recorded an open conclusion: the cause was unascertainable, with accidental heatstroke or an unidentified pathological cause considered most likely.
What did the initial post-mortem find?
On June 10, 2024, Greek police spokesperson Konstantia Dimoglidou told the BBC that initial post-mortem results did not suggest suspicious circumstances and that no injuries believed to have caused Mosley’s death had been found. The early assessment was not a confirmed cause of death. Further toxicology and histology examinations were expected, according to The Guardian’s June 10 report and The Nightly’s report.
What did the later inquest conclude?
In written findings reported on December 20, 2024, Buckinghamshire senior coroner Crispin Butler recorded an open conclusion and said no medical cause of death could be ascertained. The findings described the cause as unascertainable and said death was most likely attributable either to accidental heatstroke or to an unidentified pathological cause. They ruled out homicide, suicide and an accident related to injuries; toxicology had nothing of note. The Guardian reported the coroner’s findings, and ABC News summarized the outcome.
Butler’s quoted finding stated: “No medical cause of death could be ascertained, meaning Michael’s death may have been due to a medical event or as a result of a non-traumatic accident.” An open conclusion reflects that the evidence did not establish a more specific cause.

The findings described high temperatures, Mosley carrying a rucksack, one litre of water and a biscuit, and having a hat and umbrella. The Guardian reported temperatures above 40°C on Symi during the week of his death. These details provide context, but they do not establish whether heatstroke or another medical event caused his death.
