Michael Keaton remembered Catherine O’Hara as more than his Beetlejuice co-star: she was a friend whose relationship with him began before the first film. O’Hara died in Los Angeles on January 30, 2026, at age 71. The Associated Press reported that her representatives said she died following a brief illness; that account did not specify a cause of death.
What Michael Keaton said about Catherine O’Hara
In a tribute reported by the Associated Press on January 30, Keaton wrote: “We go back before the first Beetlejuice. She’s been my pretend wife, my pretend nemesis and my real life, true friend. This one hurts. Man am I gonna miss her.” The words captured both the comic bond audiences saw on screen and a friendship that preceded their best-known shared film.

How their creative partnership extended beyond the original film
Keaton and O’Hara worked together on the original Beetlejuice, its 2024 sequel, The Paper and Game 6. In a later remembrance quoted by TIME on February 5, 2026, Keaton described the experience of performing comedy with her as “like breathing rarefied air.” He noted that their work together spanned nearly 40 years and also included an awards-show appearance.
O’Hara’s screen legacy
O’Hara’s work reached audiences across film and television, including Beetlejuice, Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek. The Television Academy’s career and awards records provide further context for her television work. Keaton’s remembrance was personal, but it also pointed to a professional partnership that returned across films and projects over many years.
