Michael Jackson became the first artist to reach the Top 10 of the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in six different decades when “Thriller” returned to No. 10 on the chart dated November 15, 2025. The record means Top 10 placements spanning six decades—not ten different hits in each decade.
What the six-decade record means
The category is specific: at least one Billboard Hot 100 Top 10 placement in each of the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s and 2020s. It does not mean Jackson had ten Top 10 songs in every decade, nor does it describe chart performance outside the U.S. Hot 100.

Billboard Charts journalist Gary Trust reported the milestone on November 12, 2025, after “Thriller” climbed from No. 32 to No. 10. Billboard’s report also says Jackson had 30 Hot 100 Top 10s in total, including 13 No. 1s. Billboard’s chart report is the source for the chart positions and totals.
How “Thriller” returned to the Top 10
The song originally peaked at No. 4 on the Hot 100 in 1984. Its 2025 return followed Halloween, when listening and airplay rose sharply during the October 31–November 6 tracking week.

Jackson’s Hot 100 timeline
- November 1971: “Got to Be There” gave Jackson his first solo Hot 100 Top 10.
- 1984: “Thriller” reached its original peak of No. 4.
- 2018: Before the 2025 return, Jackson’s most recent Top 10 appearance was as a featured artist on Drake’s “Don’t Matter to Me.”
- November 15, 2025: “Thriller” rose to No. 10, completing the reported span across six decades.
At the time of Billboard’s report, “Thriller” had spent 26 weeks on the Hot 100, making it Jackson’s longest-charting hit there—one week ahead of “Billie Jean” and “Beat It,” each then at 25 weeks.

How the record compares—and what it excludes
Billboard’s report contrasts Jackson’s six-decade Hot 100 Top 10 span with Andy Williams, whose Top 10 placements covered five decades: the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 2010s and 2020s. This comparison is limited to the same chart and Top 10 threshold.
The Jackson 5 also placed “I Want You Back” in the Hot 100 Top 10 for a week beginning December 27, 1969, when Jackson was 11. That group credit is a separate part of his performing history; it does not change the six-decade 1970s–2020s span in the reported solo-focused milestone.

Why the headline can be misleading
“10 hits in 6 different decades” can sound as though the record involves ten songs in each decade. It does not: the documented achievement is reaching the Hot 100 Top 10 in six distinct decades. Nor is it a claim about every chart, country or measure of music success. Rolling Stone independently reported the six-decade Top 10 milestone and career context in its November 11, 2025 coverage.
