The two dates point to very different milestones in Michael Jackson’s public life: Off the Wall, released on August 10, 1979, and his first court appearance on January 16, 2004, when ABC News reported that he pleaded not guilty. One was a landmark in his music career; the other was a legal proceeding.

What happened to Michael Jackson in 1979?

On August 10, 1979, Jackson released Off the Wall, his fifth solo album and his first after leaving Motown for Epic, according to the Recording Academy. Apple Music’s catalog lists the same release date, ten songs and a 42-minute running time.

Jackson and Quincy Jones had first connected while working on The Wiz in 1978. They began their album collaboration with Off the Wall: Jones produced it, while Jackson co-produced three tracks. The disco-tinged record also featured songwriting contributions from Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney and Rod Temperton.

The album’s chart and Grammy milestones

The Recording Academy reported in 2020 that Off the Wall became the first album by a solo artist to generate four Billboard Hot 100 top-ten hits. “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough” also earned Jackson his first Grammy, for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance.

What happened to Michael Jackson in 2004?

ABC News’ timeline, published June 26, 2009, dates Jackson’s first court appearance to January 16, 2004, and reports that he pleaded not guilty. That is the specific 2004 milestone this comparison refers to.

The timeline supports those details, but not a fuller account of the hearing, the legal arguments or the case’s outcome. Those details should not be inferred from the date or the reported plea.

How the two dates differ

Year and date Milestone What it refers to
August 10, 1979 Music release Off the Wall album release; the Recording Academy retrospective and Apple Music catalog list this date.
January 16, 2004 Court appearance Jackson’s first court appearance and reported not-guilty plea, according to ABC News’ 2009 timeline.

These are separate moments in different contexts: a recorded music release and a legal proceeding. The dates do not, by themselves, establish a connection between the events.
