Michael J. Fox received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House on January 4, 2025. He called the honor humbling, but said he was proud to accept it on behalf of people living with Parkinson’s and the people who love them. The recognition cited both his acting career and his advocacy—not Parkinson’s alone.
When did Michael J. Fox receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom?
President Joe Biden presented Fox with the medal at the White House on January 4, 2025. The Michael J. Fox Foundation described it as the nation’s highest civilian honor. The White House introduction recognized Fox’s work as an actor as well as his advocacy for people with Parkinson’s. The Foundation’s announcement covered the ceremony and Fox’s response.
Why was Michael J. Fox given the Medal of Freedom?
The recognition reflected two strands of Fox’s public life: a long acting career and sustained work to advance Parkinson’s research and support the community affected by the disease. It was not an award simply for having Parkinson’s.
Fox was diagnosed in 1991, at age 29, and publicly disclosed his diagnosis in 1998. In 2000, he founded the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. The Foundation says it funds research and works with people affected by Parkinson’s. Its January 2025 announcement reported that it had funded more than $2 billion in research by that date; its later biography page, accessed October 8, 2026, gives a figure of more than $3 billion. Those are figures published at different times, not interchangeable totals for the award announcement. The Foundation biography describes Fox’s diagnosis and career.

What did Michael J. Fox say after receiving the medal?
In a statement quoted by the Foundation on January 4, Fox called the award “humbling, an honor I could never have anticipated.” He added: “I’m grateful for this recognition, which I share with the patients, families and researchers who have brought us closer than ever to ending Parkinson’s disease once and for all.”
That statement makes clear how he understands the honor: as recognition he shares with people living with Parkinson’s, their families, and the researchers working on the disease. A separate social post, reported by E! on January 6, put the emphasis on pride: “On behalf of the million or so people living with Parkinson’s, and the millions more who love them, I am proud and honored to accept the Medal of Freedom from President Biden.” E!’s report attributes that wording to his post.

How has Michael J. Fox supported Parkinson’s research?
Fox’s advocacy became an institutional effort with the foundation he established in 2000. The Foundation’s January 4, 2025, press release described Parkinson’s as affecting at least 1 million Americans, including more than 110,000 U.S. military veterans; those are estimates published by the Foundation at that time. The release also cited a commissioned 2019 study estimating U.S. direct and indirect costs at $52 billion a year. That is a study estimate from 2019, not a current annual accounting. The release provides the Foundation’s figures and context.
Fox’s remarks about coming closer to ending Parkinson’s express hope and a research goal; the medal announcement does not establish that a cure exists. The award recognizes advocacy and contributions, while research continues.

Where can viewers learn more about Fox’s story?
For readers interested in Fox’s own account and screen work, the Foundation identifies two distinct projects:

| STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie | A documentary offering an intimate look at his life, career, and experience with Parkinson’s. Apple TV released it in spring 2023. |
These works offer personal and documentary perspectives, not medical guidance. The Foundation biography discusses the memoir, and its page about STILL describes the film.
